While the Thanksgiving holiday is the prime time to remind all your friends and family why you're thankful for them, it's also the perfect opportunity for bookworms everywhere. Even though it's a fairly short break, (three days for students and sometimes only one day for those in the workforce) you'd be surprised at the amount of reading time allotted! Here's a list of the top books to put you in the Thanksgiving spirit or just satisfy those fall vibes:
1. "Until Friday Night" by Abbi Glines
"Until Friday Night" is a 2015 YA Contemporary for the romantic soul. It's a dual perspective story that follows Maggie Carlton and West Ashby. They're your typical high-schoolers; West is on the football team and Maggie is the new girl in town, but they both have burdens they've dealt with in secret, until now. Through meeting each other and becoming friends, they help each other cope and heal in a way that's really interesting to read about. Plus, what's better in fall than Friday night football?
2. "Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children" by Ransom Riggs
Who said Halloween was just for October?! Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, or Miss P for short, is a creeptacular read to put you in the fall mood. Author Ransom Riggs has a very poetic, beautiful way with words and it shines in this novel. The first book in a trilogy, it was Riggs' debut novel--hard to picture for a book that has its own movie and tons of fandom merchandise now! I first picked this up when I saw that it would be made into a movie and I absolutely adore the world he's created. I'm not one for horror movies/books, but this was a delightful story that gave me the heebie jeebies while still allowing me to sleep at night.
3. "The Giver" by Lois Lowry
"The Giver" by Lois Lowry is considered a classic by most in the reading community. It has everything you could ever want in a dystopian novel-- corrupt government, superhero-like protagonists and a pinch of romance. Originally published in 1993, it took movie-makers 21 years to bring Jonas' story to the silver screen. Society inside "The Giver" is ruled by a concept called 'sameness.' There's no pain, suffering or jealousy-- but its residents also don't have any recollection of joy or love, which they think is a crazy concept. In all actuality, sameness has erased human emotion completely--you could say they're practically robots. But, with this society, you need someone who does remember all the atrocities of the past, like genocide and war. This is where Jonas comes in. He is chosen to become the next 'receiver of memory.' In the first book of this quartet, readers see Jonas as he goes through a rigorous, and sometimes shocking, training process, where he finds out the truth about his 'home.'
. "Three Dark Crowns" by Kendare Blake
This is definitely one of my favorite covers of 2016, by far. "Three Dark Crowns" is a new fantasy novel about three royal sisters, Mirabella, Katharine and Arsinoe, each of whom possess a different magical power. Of course they have to be triplets! What other way is there to start a war over who'll get the crown? But it's not just a matter of who's more mature or fit to rule. Each of the sister's must use their individual powers in a fight to the death. Whoever is left standing gets the crown. Let the war begin.
5. "Walk on Earth a Stranger" by Rae Carson
Fall VIBES y'all! This cover just makes my heart smile! For those who usually choose the historical fiction route, this one's for you guys! Set around the California gold rush, this start to a trilogy follows Lee Westfall as she moves to Cali after heartbreak. But she's not just some gold fanatic like the rest of 'em. She can literally sense the gold around her! This may seem extremely far fetched, after all it's fantasy, but it's all the rave in bookworld. So much so that it's a New York Times bestseller. And did I mention the cover?! Heart eyes emoji.
