The transition from high school to college is a unique life experience. Leaving your long-time home, moving to a brand new place with new people, starting a whole new life – it can be overwhelming. With the chaos that is college, there comes a learning opportunity. And I learned something during my transition from high school to college that I'm going to value for the rest of my life: how to let go.
When you get to college you meet a lot (and I mean a lot) of different people. This makes it easier to find a group of people just like you to have endless conversations with. High school is so small that you kind of have to take what you can get when it comes to friendships. A lot of those friendships began in middle school, and this doesn't make them any less valuable! But college can simply change what you might want out of a friendship.
As you enter your new life, you may find yourself feeling less connected to the friends that defined your high school experience. Communication lessens, as does the amount you have in common. Winter and summer breaks get more awkward with each passing year. It sounds like I am describing the path to a breakup, but I basically am. Any kind of loss is sad, especially a best friend. You are losing something that brought so much into your life and you’ll always remember that part of you. Part of growing up is experiencing loss is, and one day you'll realize the process of letting go gets easier.
Sometimes you'll feel like someone isn’t giving you as much as you give him or her, and that is when a friendship can get toxic. You might find a quick fix, but when it comes down to it, letting go is usually the best option despite how hard it may seem.
Moving on doesn't have to be all that bad. Life is about continuously moving foreword, and the experiences you had will always be a part of you. You meet so many amazing people in college and discover so much about the person you are. In your life, knowing when to let go will always be relevant as people come and go.
Like they say: if you love someone let it go, or as Elsa says (sings), "Let it go, let it go," (words to live by if you ask me). Keep on moving forward in your story; you never know what (or who) life has planned for you!
