With music trying to progress, sometimes it starts lacking the basic essentials to be a hit. Over time, people have noticed that older music is so much better than current music. Listening to the fans, some current artists have started making music similar to the '90s and 2000s.
The most recent example is "Finesse" by Bruno Mars featuring Cardi B. In the music video, Cardi B is wearing colorful '90s clothing, and her rap is in the same beat as '90s raps. The first one that came to mind was "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air," which was a hit. For "Finesse," the beat is smooth and the pair worked well together on this song. Bruno Mars himself constantly gives '90s vibes. His hair is bushy as he wears clothes with lots of colors as well. The style of his clothes is a complete throwback.
The style of a 2000s song was done by none other than Camila Cabello. Everyone compared her song "Crying in the Club" to Christina Aguilera's smash hit "Genie In A Bottle." It sounded somewhat similar to the beat and had the same message. That message included the lyrics "So put your arms around me tonight / Let the music lift you up/ Like you've never been so high /...Like you've never been this free." Cabello channels the 2000s song by speaking of being newly "free" and unleashed.
Another new song is "Faking It" by Calvin Harris featuring Kehlani and Lil Yachty. "Faking It" has a chorus similar to both the '90s and 2000s beat. It reminds me of a popular 2000s singer named Shontelle, whose song "Impossible" hit the charts in 2010. That song felt like it was created even earlier, but catchy singles with a similar message connect the generations. "Faking It" follows the common message of not being over someone. Kehlani sings: "Why you, why you, why you checking if you're over it / Why you, why you say 'Let go' if you're still holding it?" In comparison, "Impossible" is about the aftermath of love with the lyrics, "Falling out of love is hard / Falling for betrayal is worst."
Also, everyone knows that Chris Brown dances like Michael Jackson (far before the '90s). After all of Brown's scandals, it is hard to perceive him in a positive light. However, his dance moves are beyond this generation, which is part of the reason why he is still performing. He may have a lot of issues to work out, but he is an entertainer and is definitely part of the "Taking It Back" movement happening right now.
There are so many artists in today's generation that fall under music that has already been created. It is hard to be creative nowadays because every possible subject that has been sung about has already had its moment in time. But renewing that voice, that style, and making it into their own, artists of this time are receiving recognition for and are making the most of it. Hopefully, good music is slowly going to start coming back. Someday, the next generation will look back at it and call these days the "good old days" of good music.
