Over the past couple years, "squad" has become the new term when referring to your closest group of friends. And like so many other people, I jumped on the bandwagon and now I consider myself part of a "squad." Like most squads, we have a group text which is the primary way we communicate and plan times we will all hang out. We've had this group text for close to a year and it's used multiple times on a daily basis. As you can imagine, we have all learned a lot from one another in this group text. While the personalities in our squad vary greatly, we all appear to balance each other out in a comical group text where each of our personalities really come through. Although we have more than eight people in our friend group, these are the eight personalities I have discovered from observing the components of our squad group text.
The Planner
The Planner is also referred to as “The Group Text Starter” or “The Mom.” The Planner is possibly the most vital member of the Squad. They are the reason a majority of the hang outs and bonding sessions occur because they make the plans. When The Planner is out of town, the squad typically struggles to get hang out sessions organized. This person has great initiative and is committed to making friendship happen on an regular basis.
The One Who Responds To Everything
The One Who Responds To Everything is possibly the most energetic member of the squad. They show the most amount of excitement for squad hang outs, but they are also one of the most supportive squad members. They typically respond to the group text with messages such as “YAAASSS QUEEN!!!!” or a simple “Love that.”
The Dad
The Dad is typically the oldest member of the group (but this is not always the case) or someone who is old at heart. The Dad provides lame Dad jokes and works well with The Planner in organizing squad get togethers. Occasionally The Dad might refer to everyone as “kids.” Like a real-life parent on Facebook, this person is similar to The One Who Responds To Everything by commenting on mostly everything but instead their comments are random and resemble awkward Dad humor.
The Always Down
The Always Down is always up for a good time or a bonding session with the squad. This person is one of the most chill squad members who is easy going and has a “whatever works” kind of attitude. If it is difficult getting ahold of this person it’s probably because they are already out celebrating the night. They can typically be tracked down by viewing the random photos they send in the group text.
The Ghost
The Ghost is a very valuable member of the squad group text. They might not respond in the group text or hang out with anyone in the Squad for long periods of time, but when this person does text something, it’s always hysterical so it’s imperative be prepared for a good laugh. When The Ghost responds, everyone most stop what they’re doing and acknowledge their existence. They are always out of the loop and behind on what is going on, because they are so busy being more of an adult than the rest of us. This is the squad member you typically hear from in texts but never see in real life. You might occasionally question if they actually exist or if they are a figment of your imagination.
The Free Spirit
Like The Ghost, this individual keeps the squad members on their toes because you never know what they might say. Although they might not say very much in the group chat, when they do say something it's rather fascinating. This person also doesn’t respond much because they have hippie like tendencies in which they live off the grid and constantly lose their phone. The Free Spirit definitely makes the other squad members think deep thoughts. If there is ever too much sass in the group text, this person reminds us why we are all friends and to get along with one another.
The Late Liar
The Late Liar has very good intentions but is not the best with following through with what they say in the group chat. When this person texts, “I’ll meet up with you all in 30 minutes,” this actually means they won’t arrive for a least an hour. The Late Liar tries to make up for tardiness with comical memes or emojis such as the salsa dancer or the dancing ladies dressed as cats. This individual is mysterious in the way that you never know why they are late or what they're doing.
The One That Never Responds
The One That Never Responds is a member that is often present at all hangouts but never responds in the group text. You never know if this person will be present for hangouts until after you get to therer because they typically don’t answer their phone or have it on them. Often people will comment in the group text, “Is [insert name of The One That Never Responds] alive?” The One That Never Responds will occasionally surprise people and take on the role of “The Planner.”
