Imagine meeting a girl who had the potential to be a superstar, who eventually did become a star and remained the most humble person in the entire world. Imagine almost all of her family accepting you into their family, with the exception of her father calling you cancer to the family. Imagine having to secretly marry each other with fear of her father dismantling the group over his selfish possessiveness of her and her incredible talent.
Now, one day, all of this is ripped from your fingers. She is gone. She has been murdered by someone she trusted as a friend, someone she wanted to believe was honest and would never do her wrong. This is the story of Selena Quintanilla-Perez. An almost 24-year-old Tejano singer who was shot to death in Corpus Christi on March 31, 1995.
Since her death Selena has not ceased to continue in legacy and love. Twenty-two years later, the star has received a makeup line called MAC Selena, she has an annual festival dedicated to her every spring titled Fiesta de la Flor, she has continued to win numerous awards in 1996, 1997, 2001, 2010, 2016, and 2017. She has a wax figure in the Madame Tussauds collection introduced in June of 2017.
Chris Perez is one of the kindest souls I have personally ever met. He published a book in 2012 titled, "To Selena, With Love," an autobiography/biography of this love story with his late wife, Selena. It is a beautiful story that tells their tale in the most realistic way possible because you can feel his emotions reading his words.
In late 2016 and early 2017, Abraham Quintanilla Jr., Selena's father, and her widowed husband, Chris G. Perez, entered into a lawsuit over Perez wanting to pursue a television series over his book. Quintanilla had a large issue with this as it violated an agreement that Perez signed in the same year Selena passed away. This agreement stated that Abraham Quintanilla had all legal rights to Selena's name, signature, voice, music, everything.
This agreement, which has led to the lawsuit has caused much tension in her supporters and for myself personally, I find it hard to support her family in the way they have abandoned Perez and have almost ignored his existence in this whole ordeal.
November 3, 2017 Selena Quintanilla-Perez finally received the star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame she has so rightfully deserved, but of course this would not come without the family tension and her family leaving out part of her legal name. Suzette Quintanilla posted a photo to her instagram the day before the revealing and the star read, "Selena Quintanilla" . The family had left out "Perez" and her fans are heartbroken. Suzette has released a statement saying there is nothing but love.
There is a lot of hurt surrounding this situation and it hurts to believe that this is even happening.
