As my first semester of college is quickly coming to an end, I am reflecting on the immense blessings I am surrounded by. The few months I have spent far from home have been nothing short of fun, eye-opening, and extremely rewarding. The lessons I am learning while being far from family are helping to shape me into the woman I hope to become; lessons that I will carry with me through the rest of my college experience and beyond.
1. Friends become family
We all have that one friend we call "mom." These are the friends you find a home in when you're sick beyond belief and feel like the only cure is family. I have referred to my friends for medical advice countless times, and usually they know exactly how to make me feel better. I have found friends I can count on for anything.
2. Independence like never before
One of the biggest adjustments about college is the immediate independence you are granted as soon as you step on campus, and the freedom to do (or not do) whatever you want. Unlike living under your parents roof, you can order pizza with your friends at 2 am, sleep in as late as you want, and skip the occasional class. All in moderation, right?
3. Exploring
For me personally, living in a big city, as opposed to my small hometown, was a big change. New territory allows for exploring of all kinds: restaurants, museums, shopping and sights.
4. Becoming responsible
Responsibility is the key to success. I’m learning the importance of managing my money, which sadly means not purchasing Kate Spade phone cases on Amazon prime late at night (next day shipping, are you kidding me?!), and becoming an avid deal hunter. I am amazed at how much money my parents spent during my years at home. Who knew groceries cost so much?
5. Taking care of yourself
I have come to learn it is essential to take care of yourself both emotionally and physically. That means dragging myself to the gym a few times a week, sleeping regularly, and eating as healthy as possible. That doesn’t mean I don’t stay up until 2 am occasionally and eat chocolate for dinner more than I'm willing to admit. Once again, all in moderation!
6. Appreciation of the little things
When it’s 2 am and you’re missing late night Say Yes to the Dress marathons with your mom, you really begin to appreciate the little moments spent at home with family. Walking the dog and dropping my siblings off at practice were tedious chores at the time, but I truly miss my de-stressing puppy walks and rushing my siblings around jamming to Fetty Wap. It’s the little things!
College is the best time for exploration and self discovery. As we travel home for winter break, I encourage you to be mindful when shopping with your parents, enjoy every bite of your mom’s homemade spaghetti, and squeeze your siblings and puppies tight. I am greatly appreciative for everything I am lucky enough to come home to. College is great, but there is no place like home!
