Thanksgiving is a time to enjoy the company of friends and family, to look into your accomplishments, and to take a moment to be grateful for all the things in your life. This national holiday sparks a trend of 'what we're thankful for' each year, whether it's friends and family or the opportunities we've been given throughout the year. But, the other 364 days of the year, how do we celebrate what we're grateful for on this one day? There are 364 other days to be grateful, why limit our gratuity to this one day?
To answer it simply, we don't. We take advantage of everything we have in our lives and on this one day, we're reminded to say 'Thank you'. Then, we move onto other celebrations. Of course, I'm grateful for everything I have in my life, but up until recently, I've never taken a small moment daily to think about how lucky I am. We may be grateful, but no one takes the initiative to show it. What reminded me to be grateful not just on Thanksgiving, but on every day was a simple sign at my work. It's a small sign that says, 'If you were to wake up today with everything you said thanks for yesterday, what would you have?'.
I've made an effort to make a gratuity list (a list of things I'm grateful for) and occasionally re-read it or add to it. It's a small, everyday reminder to work hard for what I've earned and appreciated those in my life who support me. My list is a reminder that Thanksgiving isn't the only day to be grateful. Showing our gratuity can come in small gestures- it doesn't have to be a full five-course meal every day. Each day there is at least one thing that we can all appreciate, even if it's simple. I've learned that the simple things are the things people are the most grateful for.
If we have 364 other days to get up each morning, why should we only be grateful for the morning of Thanksgiving? We get caught up in our everyday lives, between work, school, family, and friends. It's easy to do so. But would you still have them if you weren't thankful for them yesterday? If you had woken up today with everything you had given thanks for yesterday, what would you still have?
