Farewell, 2016...

2017, bring it on!

Farewell, 2016...
Aimee Carbonell

As I sit here and begin typing what will soon become an article of sorts, I can't help but feel a certain type of nostalgia at the thought of 2016 nearing its end. Like every other year, 2016 came with many changes, some more pleasant than others. While bittersweet, something about 2016 screamed growth, and frankly, many (if not most) of us can admit that this year taught us a great deal about evolving in numerous forms. Perhaps, many of the circumstances and events that required us to stretch past our comfort zones weren't always the most ideal, but they helped us step into much stronger and wiser versions of ourselves.

We made it. We survived the chaos and the ups and downs that came with this past year. Albeit enveloped with a hint of uncertainty and mystery, I like to think that 2017 holds much promise. We're bolder now and yet much more prudent at the same time. We've grown, accepted defeat but also faced many of our fears. We're each still a work in progress, though, and that's the bittersweet reality of life: constant change. 2016 may have been a whirlwind, but the will to push forward within us burns with enough force to overcome any and every impending obstacle.

Therefore, dear reader, I'd like to congratulate you. Feel proud of yourself for having pushed through the strife, hatred, and obscurity that came with many of this past year's events. It wasn't always awful, though, right? We took chances, formed powerful bonds and experienced countless memorable moments. Rather than placing emphasis on finding a resolution, use the lessons you learned throughout 2016 as catalysts that can propel you further into your destiny. Remember that while 2017 won't always live up to your standards or expectations, you will gradually be led exactly where you are meant to be in life. Whether that takes five months or two years, you're well on your way.

Refuse to chastise yourself because of any previously failed resolutions. Frankly, waiting for the new year in order to transform and make the necessary changes in our lives is ultimately an illusion. Be present in this moment; bask and revel in it. While you may not currently be where you want to be on your life journey, each day presented before you is a gift. In fact, with every rising of the sun springs forth a new opportunity to become the best version of yourself. Don't forget to give. Share your love, wisdom and compassion with the world around you. Use your talents and abilities to make a difference in this upcoming year and watch as the lives of those whose hearts you touch be transformed.

Know that the answer isn't found in conjuring up resolutions for the new year, but rather in the decision of making the best out of this present moment and using what you learn along the way to set foot for what is to come. Which side will you be on? The choice is up to you.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
