A Thank You To My Roommate

Thank you for being my best friend.

A Thank You To My Roommate
Tegan Wylde

This is to my freshman roommate who has turned into much more than just a roommate. Thank you.

1. Thank you for being there for me through everything.

When I say everything, I mean everything. You were there for me when I needed a shoulder to cry on, whether it was about a guy, a movie, or a class I was struggling in. You were there and you didn't have to be. It is not like you are signing a 'best friend contract' when you pick your freshman roommate. But, I was lucky to meet someone like you.

2. Thank you for going and leaving everywhere with me.

If we went out, we were together which also meant we were leaving together. We were the definition of "No Man Left Behind." If one of us was ready to leave, we were both ready to leave. We were the type of roommates that did everything together from grocery shopping to working out. If someone invited us somewhere we automatically assumed that it was for both of us.

3. Thank you for our endless sleepovers filled with laughter.

The amount of times we would make up random scenarios that would never happen then laugh how outrageous they were countless. We always were in our beds laughing out loud at the things we would send to each other on Twitter.

4. Thank you for always sliding into my DM's on Twitter with hilarious videos and memes.

This was a late night tradition for us, right before going to bed we would go through our newsfeed and find funny things to send to each other. I want to thank you for exposing me to the funniest things that I have seen in my life.

5. Thank you for constantly letting me borrow your things.

Even though we both had so many clothes, I still felt like I did not have enough. So, I appreciate when you would let me dig through your stuff when I was not feeling my own clothes. Glad we were the same size as well.

6. Thank you for having late night snacks with me.

Oh my. This is something I will never forget. We always would get completely ready for bed then decide we wanted chips and dip or Oreos. Thank you for always have those late night snacks with me to make me feel bad for eating after 9.

7. Thank you for always being down for movie nights instead of going out.

Our ratio of going out to movie nights favored movie nights by far. Thank you for watching the movies I would try to suggest on Netflix from Pinterest even when they sucked and we had to change them half way through.

8. Thank you for starting and finishing Netflix series with me.

All of the Netflix marathons we had was insane. We were always looking for a new series to watch or even watched each other series with them. It was fun having something to gossip about, along with sharing our thoughts about the show. We were always making fun of the characters outfits or how the plot played out.

9. Thank you for never judging me.

The late nights when we would come back and smash a bag of chips, Papa Johns, and Oreos you would never judge if I was still hungry after all of that. The crazy idea's I wanted to do like dying my hair purple, you were never there to judge instead you did it for me. If I tried out a new makeup look or outfit, or nail polish color you never once said anything that would question my judgement. You always gave me your support.

10. Thank you for the honesty you always give me even when it is hard.

The truth can be hard sometimes like when one of the belt loops of your jeans broke when my roommate borrowed them. But, I never was mad because she came right out and said it. Or when I was making irrational decisions you were there to straighten me out.

11. Thank you for always being so respectful.

This is one the things I am most thankful for. My roommate was very respectful of my things and my space. There was never a time when I thought she was selfish because she was constantly doing things for me. It could be something as simple as picking up a togo box full of lunch for me or filling the Keurig full of water so we would not have to in the morning. The little things really made living with my roommate the best.

12. Thank you for our jam sessions, whether it is in the car or dorm.

There would always be a new song we were hooked on and could not wait to roll down the windows and blast it. Or even just sit in the dorm and jam to it before going out.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
