A Thank You Letter To My RA

My dear, precious, wonderful Resident Assistant,

When I was preparing to move into college, there were so many things I was looking forward to. I couldn't wait to start my classes, decorate my dorm room, and get to know the two dozen girls I'd be living with for the next ten months. Along with that, I absolutely could not wait to meet the girl who would be my mentor and role model for the next year: my RA.

Move-in day was a blur, but I remember when the helpers led me to my floor and showed me to the check-in desk. You introduced yourself as my RA and gave me an information sheet to fill out. I talked to you the entire time and found out that we had a mutual love for the show "Gilmore Girls." From that moment, I knew you would become one of my favorite people.

This past year has been such a whirlwind, but I wanted to stop and take a moment to thank you for everything you've done this year for both me and my floor-mates.

Thank you for taking a video of me walking into the football stadium for the first time, because that's such a defining moment in anyone's college career.

Thank you for the countless cups of coffee and tea you brewed for me during roommate meetings, floor programs, or just random occasions.

Thank you for initiating biweekly floor family dinners to get to know everyone on our floor.

Thank you for making me laugh until I cried when we talked about how many "American Girl" dolls we had.

Thank you for loaning me your biology notes when I overslept and missed class last semester.

Thank you for giving me a haircut in the middle of the hallway when I was sick of my dead ends.

Thank you for dropping all responsibilities with me to go to Kansas City for the Bernie Sanders rally (and for buying my Bernie button).

Thank you for asking me questions to help me prepare for my own RA interview (and picking out my outfit for said interview).

Thank you for trading fake flowers with me when both of our flower vases broke on the same day.

Thank you for going with me to watch "Henry IV" to celebrate Shakespeare.

Thank you for picking out my future husband while looking through pictures in magazine articles.

Thank you for editing my annotated bibliography, because I ended up getting 100 percent on it.

Thank you for opening your room to me when I had a terrible day, listening to me vent, and offering me some much-needed advice.

Thank you for your enthusiastic, positive, and often "punny" messages on our floor GroupMe.

Thank you for your sweet, gentle spirit and kind heart.

Thank you for being my role model.

Thank you for being one of my best friends.

You are, without a doubt, one of the most inspiring women I have ever met. In the past ten months, I have never heard you utter an unkind word about anybody. You genuinely care so deeply about everybody and see the best in them, even on their bad days. You approach every situation with an open mind and empathize with everybody you meet. I strive to be just like that.

As I'm preparing to be a Resident Assistant next year, I'm looking back at all of the things you've done for everyone on our floor. You give your 110 percent in everything you do, and your RA duties were no exception. You went above and beyond to make sure everyone on our floor had the best freshman year possible, and it showed. I hope you realize how truly incredible you are.

You have set the bar unbelievably high for future Resident Assistants. If I can be even half the RA that you are, my heart will be overjoyed.

Stay stellar.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
