To The Family I Chose

Thank you for being my people.

To The Family I Chose
Brianna Gavin

I knew I wanted siblings but I never knew that I wanted all of you, 41, obnoxiously loud, encouraging, energetic, insanely amazing brothers and sisters. I definitely never wanted even two parents, but I REALLY never knew I wanted my four parents/aunts/uncles/all of the above, or even one crazy DJ/grandma (you had to be there, I guess). I got all of that (it’s okay, you can be jealous), in Flyer Promise. To the family I chose, I thank you.

Thank you for finally giving me an environment where I can be my true self. Whether that be screaming/singing “No Scrubs” by TLC on the bus rides or crying about literally anything, I know that I can count on every single one of you. I know you may get tired of my seriously loud pessimism and awkwardness, but you never let that show (most of the time).

Thank you for keeping my attitude in check and reminding me that now that we’re family, I can’t just pick up and leave. I know the idea of leaving the program runs around my head everytime the word “exam” comes to mind, but I know that there you will be to tell me to get my (you know what) to class and to stop watching Teen Mom reruns before doing my homework. You’re even there when I try skipping an event and literally make me go anyway.

Thank you for being all I have ever asked for put into one group of people. Thank you for reminding me that there is love in the world and that there are reasons to keep living. Thank you for helping me with homework problems, staying up late to have deep conversations about life with me, hugging me when I wanted to literally fall off the face of the earth and for carrying me through this past year when I couldn’t walk anymore.

Thank you for loving me more than I could ever imagined being loved. Thank you all for saving my life. You all have not only loved me, but have showed me that I can and SHOULD love myself too...and there’s nothing I can ever say to be enough to thank you all for that.

Sincerely,

Your sister/daughter/niece/granddaughter/friend BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, forever family

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Whether you met your new love interest online, through mutual friends, or another way entirely, you'll definitely want to know what you're getting into. I mean, really, what's the point in entering a relationship with someone if you don't know whether or not you're compatible on a very basic level?

Consider these 21 questions to ask in the talking stage when getting to know that new guy or girl you just started talking to:

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
