Hey Homegirl,

This past weekend I had orientation for my freshman year at Converse College. As a Spartanburg native my atmosphere has not changed drastically, but for many of my classmates, it has.

As I sat in my orientation group the question was asked,

"What are some good restaurants, hair salons, shopping places, and fun stuff do to in Spartanburg?"

Suddenly girls who didn't live in Spartanburg began shouting out things such as:

"Cookout, is so good. We don't have a cookout back home." or "The tea is so good here." and "There're so many cute coffee shops."

I got this sudden pride for the little town I grew up in as I saw girls from other cities, states, and countries rave about the South and most importantly rave about my home town of Spartanburg.

So I figured I would write my favorites of good Ole Sparkle City. This week I will start with my favorite food joints because I love food.

Chinese Restaurant:

Uncle Poons: take out and delivery. Call ahead of time. 5min from campus

Monsoon Noodle House: Downtown Spartanburg near Wild Wings. Can be a dress cute Friday Night dinner with your girlfriends restaurant or meet me at monsoon after practice restaurant.

Japanese Restaurant:

Japan House: I will fight you on this. THIS IS MY FAVORITE RESTAURANT OF ALL TIMES. It's like fast food Japanese joint. Really good flavorful entrees for good prices. Their sushi is bomb too. (Five min. from campus)

Miyakos: Has some GUD sushi. It's kind of expensive, but totally worth it.

Wings:

TNT Hotwings: 8min from campus going towards downtown. Call before, because they are only a take out place. Hands down best wings in town and trust me my family and I take our wings seriously. They give you a lot for what you pay.

Ice-cream: Go local!!!!

Hub City Scoops: In downtown Spartanburg it is SOOOO good and a really cute place to get ice-cream at. TAKE MY ADVICE ON THIS. IF YOU KNOW ME YOU KNOW I ALSO TAKE MY ICE-CREAM SERIOUSLY. I will drive miles to get me some good ice-cream. Side Note: there's a marble slab in Greenville (45min away). Call me and we can carpool.

Southern Food:

No doubt you need to take your butt to Wades if you've never been and especially if you've lived in the North......Bless your heart. When you walk into Wades it's like you just stepped foot into Grandma's wrap around porch and you can already smell the biscuits and chicken. You need to go on a Sunday morning, so you can really get the Sunday in the South feeling. Go early, because it get's pretty packed. It's three minutes from campus.

There's so many good restaurants in Spartanburg that a lot of my college friends haven't been to. Can you image someone not ever eating at Zaxby's?

Ladies, when you say your prayers tonight thank God you were born in the South.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
