It's that time of the year. October. Let the fright fest begin! October means Halloween, it means the changing of leaves and most importantly it means scary movies. That's right, check out these new or upcoming horror/thriller movies that are hitting the theaters!
1. IT
I wrote about IT in one my previous articles, but it is worth a second mention. Seeing it in theaters was a great experience, especially watching my friends get scared at the jump scares. Although it misses key details from the book, overall it is a well made movie that deserves all the attention it has been getting. It is not too late to see this horror movie, following seven best friends in the town of Derry Maine who come face to face with a children clown killer.
2. mother!
mother! Is a new movie that also is already out in theaters. This movie is a psychological horror that follows a couple whose tranquil life together is disrupted by uninvited guests. Sounds simple enough, but it is not an easy movie to understand, especially if you are unfamiliar with the Bible. The movie is actually about Jennifer Lawrence who plays Mother Earth, and her husband is God. Throughout the movie, other significant events from the Bible are shown, including Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, and even the setting sometimes resembles the Garden of Eden. It is definitely a movie I recommend seeing, especially since Lawrence is a cast member, who doesn't love her? I also recommend looking up an explanation of the movie after you see it, which is what I did, and you will definitely appreciate it more!
3. Jigsaw
You know him all too well, and Jigsaw is back! Well someone is copying him anyways... In this horror film, bodies have been turning up, each meeting a gruesome end that look similar to the famous Jigsaw killer, John Kramer, from years before. But Kramer has been dead for over ten years, who would take up this evil task? Jigsaw comes out on the 27th and is definitely something that everyone should see if you are a huge Saw fan. Especially since Saw: The Final Chapter came out in 2010, I wonder what is going to be different seven years later.
4. Flatliners
Flatliners, a horror/sci-fi movie, recently came out in theaters. It follows five medical students who are obsessed with what is beyond the confines of life. So they volunteer for an experiment that stops their hearts for short periods, each triggering a near-death experience which gives them a firsthand encounter with the afterlife. What could go wrong? With a stacked class including Ellen Page, Diego Luna, and Nina Dobrev, this is a movie that definitely seems interesting.
5. Happy Death Day
Talk about birthday's gone wrong! In this thriller, produced by Blumhouse productions (my favorite horror movie producer), a college student relives the day of her murder over and over again. She relives the day with its unexceptional details and of course the unfortunate end until she is able to discover her killer's identity. Honestly, sounds like one of those lame horror movies where the plot is stupid but the jump scares will still get you. However, Blumhouse has not let me down yet so hopefully, this movie will not be an exception.
6. The Snowman
The last time I saw a horror movie based on the winter was Krampus and I was thoroughly disappointed. Hopefully, The Snowman will be different. It follows a detective named Harry Hole who is investigating the disappearance of a victim during the first snow of the winter season. It is not the first time this killer has killed. Hole has to connect decades of old cold cases to this new one in hopes to outwit this elusive killer before the next snowfall. Sounds like my kind of thriller and I will definitely be watching it in theaters.
7. Insidious: The Last Key
Not being released until January, Insidious: The Last Key is definitely something to look forward to. If you have seen the previous three movies then you know what to expect; the jump scares, the creepy ghosts, the amazing plot twists, and of course Dr. Elise Rainier. This film follows the doctor and it begins in her youth in New Mexico and how she was haunted by a demonic spirit in her own house pushing her deeper into the Further. Will Rainier be able to survive this final movie? She has been through so much during the other movies and has definitely become one of the most iconic paranormal defeaters, besides Ed and Loraine of course.
8. The Nun
If you have seen the Conjuring 2 then you know that this is going to be a good movie, and you are definitely looking forward to it. Valak is back. Although it is not the only spin-off from the Conjuring movies, Annabelle was the first, it definitely is highly anticipated. And we have to wait until July to see it. Although not much has been released about the movie details as we still have months for it to come out, we know that it follows the mysterious death of a nun who we know becomes Valak. The directors can play around with this so much, I just hope that they go in the right direction with it.
9. Gerald's Game
Surprise, surprise. Yet another one of Stephen King's classic novels being brought to life by the filming industry. although not in theaters, you can check this thriller out on Netflix. It follows Jessie Burlingame who, while she and her husband try to spice up their marriage in a remote lake house, has to try and survive when her husband unexpectedly dies. Leaving her handcuffed to their bed frame. First of all, nothing ever goes wrong in remote lake houses in Stephen King's novels, she'll be fine... Right?? With this movie being released last month on the 29th I recommend you check it out and see what horrors await Jessie.
10. Tragedy Girls
While horror comedies can be some of the worst movies ever made, this one peaks interest based on its use of social media. It is a twist on the classic slasher genre. It follows two teenage girls who are death-obsessed and use their online show about tragedies that happened in real-life, to send their small town into a frenzy. All the while cementing their legacy as modern horror legends and getting more followers. It will be released on the 20th and is something that everyone should check out as it relates, yet exaggerates, today's modern use of social media and technology.
Now that you have ten new movies to look forward to. Some not for a while. Happy October, and don't throw your popcorn in the air at the theaters!
