Finals is a stressful time for us all. There are a million and ten terms to memorize and countless essays to edit before the final week of fall semester. During stressful times, we all would like a little guidance. Why not get this guidance from nationally recognized speakers? Ted talks are great resources for a multitude of different topics and theories. I've compiled a list of five great Ted talks to help you get through finals with flying colors.
1. "What do top students do differently?"
Australian native Douglas Barton gives an eloquent and informed Ted Talk derived from his research on top students. He lists good techniques to study as he analyzes what sets apart successful students. C'mon, who doesn't want to get tips from the best and ace that O-Chem final?
2. "The psychology of self motivation"
Finals can be a real drag. If you feel yourself failing to hit the books hard, maybe insight into the mechanics of your mind could help. Psychologist Scott Geller explains the science behind self-motivation in his Ted Talk.
3. "Why we procrastinate"
Sometimes, the siren call of social media is too much to ignore. Sometimes, we're so deep into procrastination we're cleaning stoves instead of citing sources. Vik Nithy gives a great talk on why we procrastinate and how to override these responses. This is very pertinent to studies as it's crunch time, baby.
4. "A more human approach to productivity"
Sometimes, finals make you feel like a robotic cog in a machine. Charismatic speaker Chris Bailey gives a very humanistic approach to getting stuff done. He went hardcore and even gave up his smartphone (no thanks!) but gives practical tips to be productive and do what you love. He concentrates on personal products, but his view that meditation aids productivity is still relevant.
5. "Techniques to Enhance Learning and Memory"
While your education hopefully tests critical and synthesis skills, memorization is an important component of exams. You can also get a leg up by obtaining some good learning techniques. Here is Nancy Chiaravalloti's talk on her tips to improve your memory. There's no worse feeling than a finals brain freeze - so encode this Ted talk into your mind!
