10 Gifts For The Education Major Graduating During A Global Pandemic

Let's be honest: we're living through one of the most unprecedented times in history. Not only is everyday life changing, but education is changing as well. I've seen it first hand as an educator, myself.

College seniors graduating with an education degree don't know when or if they'll find a job for the new school, and if they do find a job, there's a very real possibility that they'll begin their teaching career via distance learning.

With all of that in mind, the education majors in the class of 2020 are going to need some unique gifts so they can be set up for success in whatever teaching circumstance they find themselves in this fall.

1. Zoom University Sweatshirt

I mean, they have to document how they finished their educational journey, especially as educators!

2. A Go-To Teaching Mug

There is a mug for every teacher at every level, and whether they're teaching remotely or in-person next year, coffee is always a must.

3. A Good Planner

Every teacher needs a great planner to keep track of everything they have to do, both personally and professionally!

4. Notebooks

I know, I know, after all of the notes you took in college, you probably never want to see a notebook again, but notebooks will become your best friend to jot down observations about a child or lesson quickly!

5. Pens

You will use pens for everything, and I mean everything. Avoid red pens, though. They have such a negative association with them. Mix it up and buy your recent grad all the colors of the rainbow!

6. Something Personalized With Their Name On It

Becoming a teacher is a big deal, and when you have something to add to your room (or backdrop) with your name on it, it makes your classroom truly feel like it's your own!

7. A Good Teacher Bag

We are always bringing things back and forth from our houses to school and back again. Talk to any teacher, and they'll say a teacher bag is a must!

8. Succulents

Their future classroom may or may not have a lot of natural light, so buying them some succulents to stick around the classroom will help incorporate the outside feel into any room!

9. A Good Lanyard

Teachers have ID cards, keys, you name it! It's hard to keep track of it all, so a lanyard is always a nice gift so they can keep it all in one spot.

10. Post-Its

The perfect solution to when your future teacher needs to leave a note about something they need to do later.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
