On September 17, 2015, Taylor Swift played "Red" as the surprise song at her 1989 Tour in Columbus, Ohio, thus allowing fall to officially begin.
OK that's not exactly true, considering the fact that fall didn't officially start until September 23rd. But if you're a Taylor Swift fan and have been for about three years now, then you know how symbolic the "RED" album is to fall. It's hard to describe why this is, but I'll try my best. Taylor's lyrics on this album are some of my favorite ever and a lot of them have essences of fall in them.
1. When "RED" was released
"RED" was released on October 22, 2012. I remember the anticipation I felt waiting for the album and listening to it day after day after day as the leaves started to change and the weather got cooler. "RED" just turned 3 years old, and it is still my go-to album to really embrace fall (the main reason behind that being "All Too Well").
2. Driving
Taylor usually releases her albums in the fall, but there was something about this album that just makes you want to drive around with the windows cracked the second October begins. Not to mention, there are a bunch of lyrics in this album about driving.
"Your sweet disposition and my wide eyed gaze are sitting in the car getting lost up state"- All Too Well
"You almost ran the red 'cause you were looking over at me" - All Too Well
"Two headlights shine through the sleepless night" - Treacherous
"Loving him is like driving a new Maserati down a dead end street" - Red
3. Colors
One of the best parts of fall is its vibrant colors. I mean, the entire album is based on a color that represents passion, intensity, insanity and craziness, at least in Taylor's eyes. She includes several lyrics about the different colors of emotions and fall, thus integrating them for the perfect listening experience.
"Losing him was blue like I'd never known, missing him was dark grey all alone, forgetting him is like trying to know somebody you never met, but loving him was red" - Red
4. Autumn leaves
This is a given. Taylor writes about the transition period that is fall. She writes about a fragile relationship that started out strong, but changed drastically like the weather.
"Like the colors of autumn so bright just before they lose it all"- Red"Autumn leaves falling like pieces into place" - All Too Well
5. Coffee shops
If you have yet to find a quaint little coffee shop to spend all your time in this fall, I feel sorry for you. Not only are pumpkin spice lattes the staple of the fall season, coffee and cafes represent coziness and comfort, which you definitely want as the weather gets colder.
"But on a Wednesday in a cafe, I watched it begin again"- Begin Again
"I was reminiscing just the other day, while having coffee all along and Lord it took me away"- Holy Ground
6. Cities
Cities always make me think of fall. When I think about walking around New York or Chicago or Boston, I think that enjoying a city in the fall is pretty ideal.
"I bet you're sitting in your chair by the window looking out at the city"- I Almost Do
"I'm walking fast through the traffic lights, busy streets and busy lives"- State Of Grace
"We had this big wide city all to ourselves"- Holy Ground,
"We both wake in lonely beds in different cities"- Sad Beautiful Tragic
"In New York, be here, but you're in London and I break down 'cause its not fair that you're not around"- Come Back...Be Here
7. ClothesYou probably went back to school shopping. You were probably eager to bring out all the flannel shirts, scarves, and sweaters that have been hibernating in your closet for the last few months. Taylor wrote a few lyrics about our favorite fall attire and how essential they are during this time.
"Left my scarf there at your sister's house and you've still got it in your drawer even now"- All Too Well
"After plaid shirt days and nights you made me your own"- All Too Well
"Spinning like a girl in a brand new dress"- Holy Ground
8. Starting over
For a lot of people, fall is a change to start over. The summer is gone and a new school year has begun, so you have a brand new chance to transform yourself. Fall is a new beginning, and Taylor definitely understood that when she wrote "RED."
"For the first time, what's past is past"- Begin Again
"All I know since yesterday is everything has changed"- Everything Has Changed
"Look at you, worrying so much about things you can't change, you'll spend your whole life singing the blues if you keep thinking that way"- Starlight
Taylor has said in several interviews that "RED" was not "sonically cohesive." But I think that "RED" is so underrated and lyrically beautiful. If you've never listened to the entire "RED" album, 1. Have you been living under a rock? and 2. This very moment is the prime time to truly appreciate an amazing album. It holds so much more meaning in the fall.
