It’s been one hell of a week in the world of entertainment, mainly due to the VMA’s premiering on Sunday. However, I think we can all agree that the buzz that is still ringing in our ears is the plot twist that is Taylor Swift.
For those of you that have been living under a rock the past couple of days, the queen of revenge herself did what she is known for and that is beating others at their own game.
Swift dropped her first music video since her collaboration with Zayn Malik, “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever” that featured in the movie “50 Shades Darker.” The new vid “Look What You Made Me Do” is her greatest piece of propaganda for her Swift Nation army yet.
Now, I’m not the biggest T-Swift fan, and her reputation in the entertainment world, both on and off camera, didn’t help her, but after seeing this video and really listening to these lyrics (and if you keep up with the media regularly) you can appreciate the cleverness behind each and every word.
Imma break it down…
Looking at the timeline of Taylor Swift I think it’s a pretty safe bet that Kanye West cutting her off at the VMA’s in 2009 was the start of it all. Kayne was (and still seems to be) public enemy number one. And what better way to make that even more clear than by putting it in her song; which is what she does best.
“Don’t like your tilted stage...The role you made me play.”
In ’09 West placed Swift in the victim role having blindsided her in front of millions on national television. And the tilted stage? He had one for his previous world tour “Yeezus.”
“I’ve got a list of names and yours is in red, underlined.”
Whether this is poking fun at her song “Blank Space” or the idea of her incredibly long history of past relationships, she nailed it again by pointing out that yes, she knows that everyone knows that she knows.
Aside from the lyrics, I want to point out a few scenes that made jaws drop all over. Swift took it one step further to call out Katy Perry who, ironically enough, was hosting the 2017 VMA’s by dressing up like her and holding a Grammy—something Perry does not possess.
Was this Swift rubbing it in her face? Probably…
Swift also touched on her relationship with actor Tom Hiddleston and the “I <3 T Swift” shirt (and is now selling it for profit online in her merch store). There were also the snakes #TaylorSwiftIsASnake (those rings are also available for purchase).
Last but not least…
The final scene where you have every character that she has ever played brought back to life. And, not only that, but she mocks each personality.
Therefore, pronouncing that she knows exactly how she was perceived in each frame of her career. She also made it pretty clear that the old Taylor Swift was…dead. So, yeah, there’s that.
The new album “Reputation” is what Swifties have been waiting for. New music and a new Taylor. I have a feeling that what is in store on this album is going to be unlike anything she has ever put out before.
