For those that do not know, Taylor Swift dropped her Netflix documentary, Miss Americana, last Friday. Even if you are not a fan of Taylor's, there is a lot of relatable, current topics that are meaningful, I think, for any viewer to watch. This documentary, as an avid Taylor Swift fan, really showed me just how different her life is because of her fame, but it also demonstrated a lot of the ways Taylor is relatable to a regular audience, which is what I want to focus on in this article.
For starters, Taylor talked about her family in her documentary, touching on her mother's battle with cancer and how that affects her because of their close relationship, as well as her struggles with her father as she tries to navigate her own views and perspectives as a young adult, which I feel is something most of us can relate to. Taylor Swift, although a superstar, is a human, with a complex set of emotions and experiences that make her unique, but all-too similar to the rest of us at the same time.
Another concept Taylor touched on was her want to find true, authentic person. In the documentary, she talks about her relationship with Joe Alwyn, and how he lives a semi-normal life that she aspired to have, so they came to the conclusion together to keep their relationship out of the public eye, and fall in love more naturally. This is something that most of us aspire to attain: a companion without anyone else's input, just our individual happiness, which is something that Swift and Alwyn were able to obtain as a result of keeping their relationship more to themselves, letting things develop naturally and at their own pace.
Yet another conversation in Miss Americana was Taylor's views on politics, and the process she took to speak out and form her own opinions, even if they were against what her team, or even father, wanted her to say to the public eye. As a star, this was very brave of Taylor to do, because speaking out against politics, although makes some people excited and happy, makes just as many people dislike her and her views.
Overall, Miss Americana shows Taylor as what she is: a human. It allows the viewer to strip past her fame, and look at the person behind all of the success that she has been awarded, and what her private life, behind the public eye, looks like, which is meaningful for all viewers, whether you like Taylor or not, to see.
