If you haven't heard T Swift's new song "Look What You Made Me Do" yet, take four minutes and 15 seconds out of your day to give it a listen. I'll wait...
Welcome back! Now that we're on the same page let's face the facts: Taylor Swifts just played everyone.
It's no secret that celebrities have been known to use their art to create a social conversation or address the beef they have with someone, but Taylor may have just done all of that better than anyone else ever has...in one song. She got all of us talking about her overnight. Even those who think the new song is weak are still giving her what she was asking for. Taylor is still winning because everyone is sitting at home talking about her, which is exactly what she wanted.
So really, Taylor wins. She wanted to step out and make a bold statement to get everyone talking about her, and it worked. Even if that meant releasing a song that probably won't go over well with her fans.
Taylor Swift was already considered an icon by our generation after blessing us with the soundtracks to our middle school years, but she just upped her game after releasing this new track. We've seen this scenario happen before with Miley and Bieber. All artists eventually grow up and as they mature so does their music. But Taylor did it right. She wanted to make a statement showing everyone who she is now. And it wouldn't be a statement if no one was talking about her.
Though she has received mixed reviews, I can guarantee you, that is exactly what she intended. It's a genius marketing strategy that she had probably been planning ever since Kanye did her wrong. Swift successfully called out multiple rivals, quite directly I might add, including Kanye, Kim Kardashian and Katy Perry, just to name a few.
Taylor also deleted all of her social media posts in what many assume to be her effort to reinvent herself.
"Why?"
But really, it's pretty brilliant if you think about it. She completely rid herself of the her beloved country girl reputation and has stepped out as the new badass "it-girl" we all know she is deep down. She does all of this while calling out everyone who did her wrong these past years. Swift knew exactly what she was doing. This song was a statement. She has moved on from calling out her ex-boytoys who stood her up to calling out celebs who stole her spotlight.
To everyone who is criticizing on Taylor for her new style, just know that she probably isn't very mad. Every article and tweet written about her is just more free publicity.
So props to you Taylor. You played all of us into making you the hottest topic in pop culture right now.
