As someone whose quest in life is to be considered a “cool kid,” I was a self-proclaimed “Swiftie” at the still impressionable, however abnormally awkward age of 12. It was 2008 and her arguably best album, “Fearless,” had just come out. Her hair was still curly, she still wore cowboy boots and her music was still considered to be country. She was the girl next door.
Because of her empowering lyrics, I felt like I also had teardrops on my guitar, pictures to burn and a love that felt like forever and always that didn’t actually turn into one. I loved Taylor Swift, and I still love the 15-year-old Taylor Swift who sings about Tim McGraw.
Times have changed. In the past eight years, we’ve grown up. My opinion on this new “pop diva” is now different. She now completely overuses her star power, and it quite frankly is obnoxious and annoying. Can you not tell we have some bad blood?
First of all, she has her “squad.” I think having a great group of friends is awesome, and it’s a necessity to keep someone sane. However, T-Swizzle’s squad is made up majorly of Victoria’s Secret models. This is completely unrelatable. Also, at every single one of her concerts, she brings out some celebrity. This says to her fans: “Look at me I’m a celebrity and here are all of my successful and fellow celebrity friends.”
Also, she tries painfully hard to be awkward. Five years ago, it was adorable. In 2016, it’s annoying. Her cats are named “Olivia” and “Meredith” after Netflix-binge favorites “Law and Order: SVU” and “Grey’s Anatomy.” This is a desperate attempt to be relatable to her fans who would rather stay in and watch Netflix instead of going out. Furthermore, the dancing? Please just stop.
Finally, she basically lives on a high pedestal, and she can do no wrong. She is America’s Sweetheart ever since Kanye West told her she was nowhere near as talented as Beyoncé. One time, at MTV’s Video Music Awards, she said, “Shut up,” (with an expletive) while One Direction was on stage. Did you know that happened? Probably not because it did not get any coverage. If anybody else did it, it would be news for weeks.
Taylor Swift has been one of America’s most beloved for almost 10 years now. She has millions of fans around the world and has sold out shows wherever she performs. However, I do not know what has happened to her and what changed. Was it all of the fame at such a young age? Was it heartbreak after heartbreak?
Like I said earlier, I will always be a fan of the girl Taylor Swift once was, and sometimes, nothing beats driving around listening to “Our Song” or “You Belong with Me.” However, I will never ever be a fan of this girl with a big head and even a bigger, however closeted, ego.
Don't believe me when I say I was a Swiftie? In 2008 through 2009, I tried to rock the curly hair and side bangs like T-Swizzle herself.
