I've never been much of a dancer. The words "two left feet" don't even begin to describe the severe lack of coordination and rhythm I have.
Despite this, I begged my parents to buy me a pair of tap shoes for Christmas because of a youtube video I saw in class about the Nicholas brothers. Like all good artists, they, of course, made it look easy. So I found some free lessons on youtube and decided to try it for myself.
It was a lot harder than it looked. There were a lot of specific names for moves to remember. Sometimes my foot cramped, and on occasion, I would fall over. So the tap shoes stayed in the closet for several months until I was cleaning out my room this summer.
Though covered in dust, they were still there of course, behind the old notebooks and school projects. So I decided to take them out and try again, as soon as I cleaned them off.
Since I've started taking up tap dancing again, I've noticed something. Despite the fact that tap dancing was seen almost everywhere in movies and shows in the past, this type of dance doesn't seem to be as popular as it once was, which is a shame. Most kids don't seem to go into tap dancing as much as they want to go into ballet, hip-hop, or another form of dance.
Tap is a dance with a unique history. From experience, it's fun to learn, and honestly, just satisfying to hear. And the best part about tap is that you can make your own rhythm, or dance to any song you know.
