Standing at 5 feet and 10 inches, I'm usually the tallest person in the room, except when I'm around my family. And while I normally love my height (and the advantage that it sometimes gives me over certain people), there are some downsides to being the taller than most of your friends. Here are 6 struggles of being the tallest friend:
1. You can almost never share shoes with your friends
Being tall is often accompanied by having larger feet. Most of my friends are between a size 7 and 9, so sharing shoes with me, their size-10 friend, is out the question.
2. Selfies can be awkward
When it comes to taking selfies, I have to hold the phone and squat while everyone stands, or I squat in front of everyone so that my head won't get cut off by being behind everyone (Yes, the process is as exhausting as it sounds).
3. Jeans always look cropped on you
Many brands just don’t make jeans long enough for people my height. It’s even worse when you’re smaller like I am because most brands increase the length as their sizes go up. Please do better.
4. Buying dresses online is such a hassle
I’ve basically sworn off buying dresses online at this point because THEY ARE NEVER LONG ENOUGH.
5. Deciding whether or not to wear heels is the most stressful decision you’ll have to make
What normally goes through my mind when deciding what shoes to go with an outfit: “Should I wear the heels because they look better with the outfit and allow myself to be at least a head taller than everyone? Or should I wear sandals that aren't are cute so I don't tower over everyone?"
6. People always expect you to be a great basketball or volleyball player
Just because someone’s tall doesn’t automatically mean they are athletic. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
