Whenever the University of Iowa comes up in conversation, it isn't shocking when the response revolves around the amazing athletics, great downtown, and a category that is complete on its own: tailgating.
It has been said that at Iowa, tailgating sporting events is a lifestyle choice. We wake up earlier than we ever would want to, with a smile on our face, blast some tunes while trying to put together a quirky and spirited outfit and take the hike through Iowa City, until we make it to our tailgating destination. Bleeding black and yellow makes you a Hawkeye, and if you go to Iowa or just support the school teams (like hundreds of people all over do), you can vouch that the only colors you can see are black and yellow. When the dust settles the next day, you can still see only those two colors even if no one is wearing them and they are now burned into your eyes permanently.
I think if you're going to deck yourself out in gear that supports the school you've come to fall in love with, you should do it in style. Why not have some pep in your little Hawkeye step (even though if it is a night after "dollar you call its" it is more of a drag than a step)?
Located on 30 S Clinton St, in between some of our favorite bars and across from our gorgeous Pentacrest, is the spirited and authentically vintage-inspired store Tailgate Iowa. Its sleek and retro look on the outside welcomes you in withits windows decked out in the stylish outfits constructed of killer Iowa and sport-inspired gear. Adorned with vintage sporting goods and framedpictures of sporting events from the past, Tailgate is a store that you cannot just pass by and not feel intrigued to go inside. The girls of Tailgate mix more modern pieces of fashion with Iowa-inspired clothing, creating a retro and fun look to go out in, tailgate in, or even model in -- because you're going to feel like a model after you purchase some Tailgate apparel.Inside the store, the walls are made of brick and rock, creating a very authentic and cool look to shop in, or if you're like me, to hang out in. A few stadium seating chairs are planted for the non-shoppers to sit and enjoy the company of friendly, and not to mention stunning, sales associates. The high ceilings create more room for apparel to hang above your head, almost overwhelming you with choices and your eye can't just decided on one thing to grab.
Tailgate is not just about clothing. They sell classy accessories for your tailgating supplies -- such as engraved flasks and fun water bottles -- and their counter is filled with buckets of old-fashioned penny candy to create a retro check-out experience. This is perfect for the alumni who come into the store and get taken through a time warp, maybe even buying a vintage-looking letterman jacket to bring them right back to their athletic days!
The prices of Tailgate apparel are very reasonable; there are some higher priced items that make the most special of gifts. Everything is folded and displayed in the most creative ways and is appealing to the eye of the customer. Plus, it doesn't hurt that they sell dainty and beautiful jewelry to top off any outfit, and for the men they sell an abundance of hats and socks that can complete the look with style. Whether you want a sporty, comfy, or a bit of a glamorous look, Tailgate offers it all. And I promise you that the ladies of Tailgate know how to style.
There is not one spot of store space not decorated on point, and, I won't lie, it is very hard to walk out empty handed. I am still trying to figure out which pair of PF Flyers I want to purchase -- because a girl can never have too many shoes. Tailgate Iowa is a hidden gem in Iowa City that is no longer hidden. Its edgy twist on school-spirited apparel is perfect for any occasion. Going into this store is more than just going into a store -- it is an experience that can brighten your mood and appeal to your eyes... and wallet. Tailgate dares you to be bold, to be an individual, and to be a walking poster child for University of Iowa.
Check it out. You won't be disapointed. And if you are, you shouldn't call yourself a Hawkeye ;)ALL PHOTOS TAKEN AND EDITED BY CONNOR BARBER PHOTOGRAPHY
