This winter has been brutal with the large amounts of snow across the country, and record temperatures of around zero. Popular destinations for spring break are mostly Florida beaches, but there are other places that are just as nice if not nicer, without annoying college kids:
Puerto Rico is known for being a beautiful island in the U.S. It has a true Caribbean feel. With the risk of climate change swallowing low-level areas, it's better to go now than later. Unlike other destinations, Puerto Rico has the El Yunque rainforest and lots of island shopping in San Juan.
Much like New Orleans, Charlestown has a similar old town field. Founded in 1670 as a port city, it has great seafood from the day's catch among neighboring beaches. Hilton Head and Folly beach are a short drive away. Seeing historic downtown with local restaurants and horse-drawn carriages make a relaxing experience with Palmetto trees and loads of shopping. Another must see is touring the ship museums on the harbor, including Fort Sumter.
Famous for filming Forrest Gump, Savannah offers an allure of ghost and walking tours around the city. An abundance of river cruises and ocean activities can be found, including dolphin tours. Also, beaches surround Savannah for time away from the city.
Known as "the southernmost point in the continental United States," Key West is famous for being a set of islands at the tip of Florida. One main destination is the Key West Shipwreck Treasure Museum featuring artifacts from shipwrecks from the past 400 years. Also, Key West has a lot of parks to take long walks around the city and on the beach.
The Grand Canyon is a great destination for spring break. It might be on the chillier side, but going during the off-season had its positives. During spring break, the Grand Canyon isn't busy. The Grand Canyon National Park offers park tours. Although in a remote area, the Grand Canyon is peaceful and has astounding views with lots of wildlife.
Full of country music, Nashville, Tennessee, is a cultural experience like no other. There's lots of restaurants and nightlife. Not only is there the Grand Ole Opry, but bus tours of where the show, Nashville, was filmed. The Country Music Hall of Fame Museum and a Jack Daniel's distillery bus tour are must do's.
Atlanta is famous for the creation of Coca-Cola and the museum is there to prove it. World of Coca-Cola offers tasting different Coca-Cola products, observing the bottling process, history of the Coca-Cola brand, and a film. In addition, CNN is also based in Atlanta and offers studio and newsroom tours. The College Football Hall of Fame is not to be missed and is sponsored by Chick-fl-A of course!
Finally, going somewhere warm and peaceful has its benefits before we are all back grinding on finishing the semester and finals.
Writing on Odyssey is one of the most special experience I have had in college. Not only it is so rewarding, help people sense meaning out of their lives, have a learning experience, have very talented writers, but most importantly develop my own style of writing. With all of our unique qualities as writers, there are we all share of being part of such an awesome community:
1. The Pressure On What To Write About
We all know that once Monday rolls around the pressure is building on what to write about for that week. Whether it be personal or addressing what's popular each week in the media, it can be hard to know what to write about.
2. Asking People What's Important To Them
In all disparity of being a good writer, sometimes there are weeks where you have to ask other people for ideas(A huge thank you to my residence hall for contributing to my articles so openly and helping me with anything I needed). I'm now wondering who I will ask next year(lol). It's also helpful to see other people's point of view regardless of the media thinks people feel.
3. Selecting The Cover Photo
Oh, the cover photo. Going in knowing it may be replaced, it is indeed possible to spend an hour looking for the one that is unique to you. If you're like me, you search at least five sites for the special one.
4. Tag It Up
It's so easy to spend hours tagging one odyssey article to get the amount of views you want. This is probably the hardest part out of publicizing your article. What tags to put that are most central to your article but also what is related to what you are conveying. You probably need a caffeinated Starbucks coffee to make it through the first hour.
5. Constantly Mention Odyssey To Anyone You Know
"Hi, I'm Lorena and I write articles on Odyssey, a content creation platform" is what I normally say to people when they ask me what I do. Talking to people in your residence hall or in class is one of the best ways to advertise your articles and yourself! Love talking to people about what you do and the things you are involved in. And most of all, sell yourself!
6. Making The Numbers
In business, you're asked to deliver numbers the company wants. It's kind of the same thing as writing and receiving the views you want. To make the number of views you want depends on the number of tags on your article. Lastly, more views equals more time.
7. Advertising On Your Social Media Profiles
You know if you've been posting on Odyssey for a while, people might get tired of you promoting your articles. "Ugh another article post, I can't stand this girl" is probably what a lot of people think, but you do what you love and like what you do.
8. Picking A Topic That's Already Been Done To Death
As Odyssey creators, we all know that there are topics that you want to do that have literally been done so many times. Whether it is about your mom, "The Bachelor," or how high schoolers can make the most out of their senior year, sometimes you just can't help yourself hoping it will be better than someone else's who did it before you.
9. When You're Just Short Of The Word Count
Nothing is more painful than being short of the word count. You realize you just got to BS yourself through those final 10 words when you have no idea what else to say.
10. Your Picture Is Changed Because Its Been Used Too Many Times
What can I say, it happens to the best of us!
11. The Temptation Of Writing Listicles For Multiple Weeks
Nothing is more tempting than writing a listicle. Odyssey might as well be famous for listicles. Lists are also very popular to read on the internet and impossible to ignore. Although, branching out from a listicle is always ideal.
12. Writing At The Most Random Times
For me, I get most of my article ideas in the shower and then write a whole article no matter what time of day or night. The inspiration comes at the most random times.
13. Thinking About The Right Time To Write
If you are not writing, you're thinking about the next time that you can write an article.
14. Putting Off Schoolwork To Write An Article
If writing is your number one priority, you definitely put off your studying and procrastinate by dishing on the media's latest hot topic.
15. Loads Of Time = Loads Of Writing
When there is a lot of time on your hands, this means you have many opportunities to write your heart out, or write two articles for the next two weeks.
16. When The Weather Matches Your Writing Mood
Snow and rain are primetime for writing an Odyssey article. Curl up in bed, relax and drink coffee or hot chocolate.
17. The List Of Headlines You Have Yet To Start On
I often plan what articles I will write each week and have a long list that I will probably never get to.
18. From Failure To Instant Success In One Week
Your article could do really well or fail miserably. Those two thousand views on one article makes up for it though and you suddenly feel like an internet sensation.
19. Your Family Gets Tired Of Your Articles
Me: "Mom, guess what I wrote about this week!?!?"
Mom: "?" with an extreme lack of excitement.
20. You Live To Write
As writers, it's hard to recognize why people don't write. For those of us on Odyssey, we practically document our lives. I mean someone's gotta do it.
We're all self-published authors thanks to Odyssey and people's willingness to tell their stories. Cheers to many more years of blogging and writing!
I have been an active Disney fangirl for my whole life. As I get older, I have seen to infected my family and friends with my passion for Disney. While I could write a 2,000-page essay about why I love Disney, we're going to be focusing this article on something a bit more fun.
Disney fashion is always in style. From celebrities to your crazy neighbor Janet, everyone rocks a good Disney style. One of my biggest Disney secrets is I always pre-buy my outfits before I go on a Disney parks adventure. Now, I have established enough of a collection to where I don't feel the biggest need to continue to purchase new Disney merchandise, but you know... some people do drugs, I buy Disney shirts. Okay?
Over the last couple of months, I have had a strong appreciation for the adorable online stores that create or sell Disney clothes. I used to not really be a fan and I can't tell you why, but these people are flipping creative. I am not only speaking highly of local small businesses, but even a few national retailers have really upped their Disney game and friends, it's time you hear about it.
Whether you're planning your next Disney trip, looking for a cute gift or are celebrating payday- check out these online stores for your next outfit.
1. Hazel and Bean
TODDLER SIZES, Disney, toy story, woody, buzz, Disneyland, Disneyworld, women's shoes, gifts under 40
While Hazel and Bean sell tons of Disney clothes and accessories, I am obsessed with her shoes. These shoes are available for kids and adults, plus she is always releasing new styles and themes based off of your favorite Disney and Pixar movies. Plus, her Instagram is adorable, every Disney fan needs to be following it.
I am such a fan of these guys and their incredible clothing line. Whenever I visit the parks, I always see a couple of Lost Bro.'s shirts roaming around. Their hip and laid back style with a splash of Disney magic is unlike anything sold in the parks. I mean, look at this Edna shirt! You can't tell me she wouldn't be a fan.
If you follow any Disney blogger on Instagram, you have totally heard of and seen this company. They're not showing off this stuff for no reason, either. Check out their Instagram and their website and you'll see what the hype is about.
I'm in love with Happiest Tees On Earth. I am always sharing their photos to my friends because their t-shirt designs are so adorable. Although, I am always commenting asking for a Pixar shirt. Maybe some magic will happen in the future and I can rock a Pixar Happiest Tees On Earth shirt at Pixar Pier.
As I am currently writing this in my BooHoo X Disney hoodie, BooHoo is such an underrated online store when it comes to Disney merch. Their styles are fresh and really well priced. I am in love with my hoodie. I will probably even wear it in the summer.
Summer is long gone and it is time to switch from the bight fun colors to bold statement pieces. We have all heard the saying "what comes around goes around," and this can't be truer in the fashion world. One of the biggest comebacks this season has been animal prints. There are endless amounts of options with leopard, snakeskin and zebra prints. Whether you are into big fur leopard coats or snake print boots here are some pieces for those of you who want to stay looking trendy while on a college budget.
Cheetah Print Ankle Jeans
Pair cheetah print jeans with a cute black top and booties and you're ready to tackle the day. Forever 21 has one that will knock your socks off!
One thing I love about pieces like this is that it can take your casual day outfit to a chic night look. Just remember to switch out your shoes to a pair of black strappy heels and get ready for the compliments to flow in.
Hear Meow-t Leopard Cardigan | Nasty Gal!
Adding a print cardigan can take your simple look to a chic and stylish one. Better yet, this will keep you warm and comfy at all times.
Slinky Leopard Print Square Neck High Rise Bodysuit | Boohoo
There are many ways one can style a simple leopard bodysuit. If your day consists of running errands or you're planning on having lunch with a friend, put on a black denim skirt or shorts with black sneakers and a denim jacket. You'll be ready to go out in no time. For a night out, style it with some black jeans, black strappy heels, and big gold hoops; you'll be set for a fun GNO.
Petite Snake Print Slinky Culottes | Boohoo
These snake print pants are the ideal pants for a nice brunch outfit.
Just like animal print, 90's style hair scrunchies are making a comeback and we're all here for it, but with a little twist. If you have ever tried tying a head scarf you know it can get a bit tricky. Designers have decided to make our lives a bit easier creating hair ties with the hair scarf already part of the scrunchie.
Topshop Zebra Print Mock Neck Top | Nordstrom
Zebra print gives the simple black and white striped tops an edgier look. This zebra print top will pair with an all-black outfit or even a bolder colored bottom! Fashion is all about taking risks, so don't be afraid to mix more than animal print together, as shown in the picture.
Snake Print Boots
Midnight Lover Boot - Snake
Last but not least, these snake print boots are a must-have. Style them with a simple outfit, so your shoes can steal the show and make everyone gravitate towards them.
All of the options I listed above are perfect for simple outfits or bold oufits! Wear these selections and wear them proudly and confidently!
