While freshman year was full of a lot of awesome memories and some pretty great experiences, I definitely had my fair share of embarrassing moments and had quite a bit of discovering to do. Hopefully this will help you, the class of 2020, out a little bit, and you'll avoid having to learn some of these lessons the hard way (see #8).
1. Learn to sleep everywhere and anywhere.
This is a valuable skill, especially during testing weeks. Key places include library study cubicles, couches in Evans and the MSC flag room.
2. Keep your friends close but your coffee even closer.
Freshman year can be a little intimidating and sometimes downright daunting. You’ll need a close group of friends to get you through some tough times, but coffee will be the thing getting you up in the morning
3. Become an expert in taking less than five minutes to get ready.
You’ll need to be after you’ve hit snooze for the eighth time.
4. Join an organization.
Whether it’s Greek life, a FLO or a sports team, an organization will help you meet people, network, and make lifelong friends.
5. Invest in good shoes.
Because odds are your classes are on opposite ends of the campus.
6. Always carry a phone charger. Always.
And a laptop charger.
7. Buy a sports pass.
Fightin' Texas Aggie sports are no joke and are not to be taken lightly. You don’t want to miss out on any of the action.
8. Learn where your classes are before the first day.
Nothing screams “freshman” like dramatically busting into the wrong lecture hall and watching 300 heads turn in unison to stare at you. I may or may not have done this myself.
9. Buy your flash cards in bulk.
During my freshman year, I used over 2,600 flash cards. I know what you're thinking. This is excessive. And you're darn right; it is. That being said, trust me when I say that you'll be using just as many.
10. Appreciate this university and everything it stands for.
We are beyond lucky to be at this school; don’t take it for granted. Know the history and the traditions and be grateful to be where you are.
11.Come to peace with the fact that you will get nothing done on Saturdays.
Saturdays are game days. That's all they are. Accept this and plan accordingly.
