Surveillance cameras are one thing that almost everyone has. They come in different forms and shapes for the varying levels of protection one wants, and they are usually found in common places like parking lots. Along with that, they help the rate of bad things like crime go slightly down. Some believe that having these cameras help ensure safety, while others believe it violates our right to privacy and it gives law enforcement too much power. However, in my opinion, I think that these cameras are a good idea because for one they help us ensure our safety because in the world we live in anything can happen at any given time.
I believe that surveillance cameras are a good idea are that they help promote a safer environment. "According to it, crime incidents in Humboldt Park dropped 20% after the cameras were put in public…Posters can be created and the images can be aired on network television to help spread the word about the criminal. Without the footage from the CCTV camera, it can be extre\mely difficult to gain a quality description of the person who committed the crime, even if there were eyewitnesses. By having surveillance cameras, the crime rate has been proven to go down. In addition, since the crime rate has gone down, this has made the streets we roam on safer. Furthermore, it was the surveillance camera that helped the police catch the gunman involved in the Boston Marathon attack, this being only one example. Therefore, this proves that the surveillance cameras are good.
In addition, they help innocent people continue to be innocent. "Any footage that is on a surveillance camera that captures a crime being committed can be used in a court of law as evidence against the accused. In some cases, if there were no footage there would be little or no evidence to convict the person of the crime and the individual may go free. Those night vision security cameras feature a good and long-range of night vision so that robbers can be recognized even if they commit a crime in dark areas. Additionally, in some cases, the video surveillance footage can also help prove someone's innocence if they have been accused of a crime that they did not commit."
If a person is actually innocent, then there will be evidence proving that. Nowadays in court one of the key pieces of evidence is trying to get your hands of surveillance footage. In addition, "robbers can be recognized by" helping the police by making their jobs easier. Lastly, they tend to make the court's jobs easier because if there is surveillance proving it then the case will be closed without questions from anyone.
Controversially, surveillance cameras also do not give people their privacy. For example, if someone wants to see what others are doing then he or she can easily do that by using surveillance footage. It is as if the AT&T services checking your browser history without your consent stating that you are okay with it. Which is not true.
In the end, surveillance cameras have a good side and a bad side to them. They help people continue to be innocent, and they help the police catch the robbers. However, with every good thing, there is a bad, and in this case, it is the fact that people get no privacy. I personally believe that have surveillance cameras are a good thing, but some may disagree because of the fact they do not get their constitutional right to privacy.
