Although the stage hasn't been set yet for the Superbowl (I mean the teams haven't been picked yet), the halftime show has and although it is geared towards a younger crowd. Katy Perry is going to have to beat out some amazing other performers to crack into the top ten Superbowl halftime shows.
It was announced in October that Katy Perry was chosen from the group of finalists, which included Cold Play and Rihanna, to perform at the Super Bowl XLIX Half Time Show. She has since announced that one of her guests onstage during the performance will be Lenny Kravitz. However, before I even discuss the choice of Katy Perry, I want to take a look back at some of the best (and worst) Super Bowl Half Time Show Performances. According to Billboard, the top ten Super Bowl Half Time Show Performances are:10. Michael Jackson, 1993 where he sang Jam, Billie Jean, Black or White, and finished out with Heal the World9. Aerosmith, 'N Sync & Britney Spears, 2001 where they started with Bye Bye Bye and then moved into I Don't Want to Miss a Thing, followed by It's Gonna Be Me and Jaded, the final song ended up being Walk This Way
when Aerosmith and 'N Sync were joined by Britney Spears, Mary J. Blige, and Nelly for an awesome closing
8. Paul McCartney, 2005 where he sang the hits: Drive My Car, Get Back, Live and Let Die, and closed out with Hey Jude7. Janet Jackson & Justin Timberlake, 2004 where not only did Janet and Justin perform but P. Diddy came out for two songs as well as Kid Rock and Nelly came out for one song, this was the controversial wardrobe malfunction year that put the committee on high alert for future acts and future problems, if there hadn't been a wardrobe malfunction Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson singing Rock Your Body could have been a great moment in 2004
6. The Rolling Stones, 2006 where they sang Start Me Up, Rough Justice, and (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction
5. Beyoncé, 2013 when Beyoncé brought back Destiny's Child to perform two of their top hits Bootylicious and Independent Women Part I, it had been leaked that this was going to happen so it wasn't much of a surprise but I think it would have been amazing had it not gotten leaked ahead of time, every girl who grew up listening to Destiny's Child found herself tugged back to her younger self
4. Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, 2009 where Bruce and the E Street Band sang Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out, Born to Run, Working on a Dream, and ended with Glory Days, Bruce was the perfect person to do the show at the time to appeal to an older crowd of over 40 who grew up listening to him and is one of those artists who represents the American Dream
3. Madonna, 2012 who brought out LMFAO, Nicki Minaj, MIA, and Cee Lo Green for the last two songs, people thought this was Madonna's Comeback but it wasn't as amazing and remembering compared to some other shows that I vividly remember and although everyone knows who Madonna is it wasn't her great comeback
2. U2, 2002 where a tribute to 9/11 was made beautifully with the names of the fallen on the screen behind U2, although U2 is not an American group, their presence was very powerful and they started it with Beautiful Day
1. Prince, 2007 was great when he brought out the Texas A&M University Marching band to perform alongside him while he sang We Will Rock You, Let's Go Crazy, Baby I'm a Star, Proud Mary, All Along the Watchtower, Best of You, and Purple Rain, again Prince was someone who the older demographic could sing along with
However, the committee has now decided that the younger demographic is more important so they choose Katy Perry, someone who appeals to those in their teens, twenties, and thirties, someone everyone has heard on the radio, and someone who they know will add a splash to a show that needs a bang.
Are you excited for Katy? What songs do you think she'll sing? Who has been your favorite performer? Who do you think should perform for Super Bowl L?
