When The Sun Didn't Rise

In an election cycle that capitalized on fear, discord, and hate - communities everywhere were devastated to see that the sun didn't rise like they hoped.

When The Sun Didn't Rise
Navin Sarma

When the sun didn’t rise;

My hopes and my prayers were denied.

When the sun didn’t rise;

My children woke to still night.

When the sun didn’t rise;

We looked to the moon for hope and light.

My sun did not rise,

After that long and painful night.

I watched as we cried,

Now fearing this new life.

Rallies to fight,

Violence basking in the spotlight.

Freedom given.

Freedom taken.

Unquestionable fear,

The dread that our end was near.

My sun did not rise,

The morning of November 9th.

My sun did not rise,

When we lost sense of wrong and right.

No sun can rise,

Until we rise.

It will not rise,

Until our families can thrive,

Without fear for their lives.

Until the smoke clears,

And our wounds heal,

My sun will not rise.

But my moon will shine bright,

In anticipation of that blessed sunlight.

One day,

That sun will rise,

As a promise.

A promise,

That we no longer need to fight.

That the world we know,

Will be bright.

Will be right.

That never again,

Will I wake only to see a moonlit night.

Yet until that day,

We fight.

Fight for rights.

Fight for sunlight.

Porque el sol no salió;

Mis ilusiones y oraciones rechazadas fueron.

Porque el sol no salió;

Mis hijos despertaron a noche inmóvil.

Porque el so no salió;

Buscamos en la luna luz y esperanza.

Mi sol no salió;

Tras esa larga y dolorida noche.

Presencie nuestro llanto,

Por miedo a esta nueva vida.

Mítines para enfrentar,

La violencia disfrutando ser el centro de atención.

Libertad dada.

Libertad arrebatada.

Incuestionable el miedo,

Ese temor que nuestro fin estaba cerca.

Mi sol no salió,

Esa mañana del Noviembre 9.

Mi sol no salió,

Cuando perdimos el sentido entre el mal y el bien.

No sol puede ascender,

Sin nuestro ascender.

No saldrá,

Hasta que nuestras familias prosperen,

Sin temer por sus vida.

Hasta que el humo no se despeje,

Y nuestras heridas no sanen,

Mi sol no saldrá.

Pero mi luna con su brillo iluminara,

Anticipando ese bendito sol.

Algún día,

El sol saldrá,

Como promesa.

Una promesa,

Que no tendremos mas que luchar.

Que el mundo que conocemos,

Sera iluminado,

Sera justo.

Que nunca más,

Tendré que despertar a ver solo luna, solo noche.

Pero hasta ese día,

Lucharemos.

Lucharemos por los derechos,

Lucharemos por la luz del sol.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
