Summer's ABCs: All Things Sun
THE OLIVENGLISH

Summer is here and that means a few things. First and foremost, summer break. No school, homework, tests — zilch. It is the time of the year that screams fun and the cool thing about that is that it can happen in your own backyard or from afar. It's activities and adventures galore. There's so much to do and so much to say.

A: Aloe

Comes in handy. A sunburn's best friend. Nothing but a quick fix when turning into lobsters.

B: Beach

Fun out in the sun. Going to the beach is classic for a summer to-do list. It's a day of activities wrapped into one. There's plenty to do: sandcastles, volleyball, swimming. Boredom ceases to exist at least for a little bit.

C: Concerts

Music definitely pumps the summer vibes.

D: Drive-ins

Nighttime and movies go perfect without saying.

E: Excitement

With all the many things to do throughout the summer months, how can one not feel the excitement?

F: Family

Friends and family is a must have for summer.

G: Grilling

There's nothing like a backyard barbecue to help pass the days with hamburgers, hot dogs and chips.

H: Heat

Summer would be nothing without the heat.

I: Ice

From ice chips to ice cream, it all beats the heat.

J: July 4th

Independence Day brings thoughts of freedom and fireworks, of course. From Pop-its to throw, to sparklers to spell out our names in glow.

K: Kool-Aid

With heat comes thirst and what's better to quench that thirst than some Kool-Aid and lemonade.

L: Lightning Bugs

Stargazing while catching lightning bugs during the appreciated cool temperatures.

M: Munchies

Enough is said with s'mores outside by a fire.

N: Netflix

Movie nights are ideal. Lie back on the couch with the fan on you and a bowl of popcorn nearby.

O: Outdoors

A place full of so many adventures to partake in. Best for picnics, kites, parks and bikes.

P: Popsicles

The heat's kryptonite.

Q: Quiet

Although hanging out with others and doing get-togethers are awesome, having a little "me-time" is just as needed as well. Peace and quiet goes hand in hand with some rest and relaxation.

R: Relaxation

One of the best ways to relax is to lie back with a good ole' summer book.

S: Swimming

Swimming might possibly be the first thing to come to mind when thinking summer.

T: Tan

It starts with the clothes, but getting that perfect tan masters the look.

U: Umbrella

The safe haven for the scorching hot days: shade. Easy comfort to be found under an umbrella.

V: Vacation

A time to get away leaving all the worries and stress at home. The focal point is definitely on some R&R.

W: Watermelon

When do you go at red and stop at green?! When you are eating watermelon.

X: Xenodochial

Finding a word for x is extremely difficult, but xenodochial means hospitable. What better way to be for the summer. Nothing is wrong with being friendly and welcoming.

Y: Youth

Summer things to summer flings that might become everything.

Z: Zoo

At the zoo, one can embark on all types of explorations from the Sahara to the Arctic.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
