Just about every movie about teenagers supports the idea that there is nothing better than a summer fling -- but a summer love isn't all that it's cracked up to be. We've seen the movies and read the Nicholas Sparks books, but in reality, nothing ever ends with running away into the sunlight. Sure, in the moment, a fling can seem fun and exciting, but the inevitable truth is that "summer flings" are nothing beyond heartbreak and confusion.
There's nothing cooler or more fun than the idea of a new and adventurous relationship. Except when that new relationship is only supposed to last for less than 3 months. This leads to being left in a state of confusion and simply being let down. "The Last Song" and "The Notebook" create this facade of what a summer fling is supposed to be like -- as if your summer love could ever compare to the award winning fiction depicted in love stories. *rolls eyes* These movies and books, although great, romanticize the idea of a summer love, making it out to be way more incredible and lovely than it actually is.
However, no need to feel discouraged, as there are so many other ways to have an amazing and action-filled summer. Why be tied down? No one wants to live through the confusion of "should I call?" or "Is it too soon?" How about going to the beach every day, or road tripping across the U.S.? If anything, we need to acknowledge that sure, a summer fling can seem great for the moment, but the aftermath leads to nothing but heartbreak. Don't feel the need to surround yourself with a summer love. Instead of ignoring your friends for some low-life guy or girl, make your friendships stronger and spend your precious summer time doing everything you can't do during the school year.
There are about a million ways to spend your summer vacation -- don't waste it on someone who is not even worth your time.
