Ever since the Superman reboot titled "Man of Steel" came out in 2013, fans of the DC Comics Universe have been itching to see what's next to come in this newly created cinematic universe. After "Batman vs. Superman" opened in theaters in March of 2016, Warner Bros. has now turned their focus to the release of the third film in the DC Extended Universe titled "Suicide Squad," with David Ayer in the director's chair. After the mixed reception of "Batman vs. Superman", will "Suicide Squad" be enough to push the success of Warner Bros. and DC Extended Universe? Yes, and here is why.
"Suicide Squad" takes a direction that we have never seen done on film. Not only will it be the big screen debuts for some characters out of the comic books, but it will also be the first film to be released that centers on a team of super villains. For those unfamiliar with the background of this iconic team, the Suicide Squad (known as Task Force X) is an antihero team of imprisoned super villains recruited by government official, Amanda Waller to complete black ops missions. Their reward: clemency. Making a movie about a team of super villains is a very big step that I applaud from Warner Bros. It shows that while they are building their own cinematic universe, they are doing things entirely different from that of Marvel. Unlike superhero films released over the years, "Suicide Squad" displays the dynamic of bad guys versus dangerous threats rather than the ordinary hero versus villain fights.
In describing the film, director David Ayer stepped out on the red carpet at Warner Bros. CinemaCon presentation and calls it "utter madness." Without giving away too much, he did give a sense at what to expect from the film and its characters as well as the performance of Jared Leto.
According to Ayer, you can expect there to be some humor in this film. With the tone of DC films being so dark, adding humor to a film like this will definitely have fans super stoked and push the success of the DC Extended Universe.
"Suicide Squad" features some of Hollywood's A-list actors, such as Will Smith as Deadshot, Jared Leto as The Joker, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Joel Kinnaman as team leader Rick Flag and Viola Davis as the ruthless Amanda Waller. Upon casting, Davis revealed that she has signed on for three films as Amanda Waller. In addition to the remaining cast of the film, Ben Affleck is confirmed to reprise his role as Bruce Wayne/Batman from Zack Snyder's "Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice."
"Suicide Squad" releases in theaters on August 5, 2016.
