There are many common phrases and topics sorority girls talk about especially on our campus. Whether it is overheard from random girls, friends or even me (guilty), the trends are heard all the time."Groovy" is out and "I'm dying" is in. The sorority dictionary for 2014. The word “literally” has taken on a life of its own to describe situations. Sayings like “I literally have no money,” “I literally have so much to do” and “You literally have nothing to worry about” have been used.
What is funny about using this word so often is that the meaning of literally is exactly and in a literal manner or sense. When using this are girls meaning they truly do not have any money or are they over-exaggerating the situation? Nine times out of ten the girls are over-exaggerating. “I can’t.” This saying is often used when there is a funny or shocking situation. If your sorority sister shows a funny YouTube video, the sorority girl would say something like “Oh my God, I can’t” or “I literally can’t deal with this.” Another common phrase using I can’t is, “I can’t handle you.” This is when girls are teasing their friends when they are doing something funny or ridiculous.
A common question many non-sorority people ask is “You can’t what?” “I’m dying.” This phrase is used for funny situations. In a funny video, movie, TV show, etc. if there is a very funny situation girls will say “I’m dying.” This phrase is used if the girl is “dying laughing” so she says “I’m dying.” Most sorority girls are also known to share their love of food through social media. Whether it is posting a picture of food they made or got at a restaurant on Instagram, or retweeting food accounts on Twitter, girls are always showing their love for food. Especially foods like pizza and cheesy bread.
Thanks to Jennifer Lawrence, the phrase “Where’s the pizza?!” has gained popularity. In an interview, Lawrence told that when she and her costar, Josh Hutcherson, were in Hawaii they were out all day and Hutcherson’s mom said she would have pizza when they got back. When they got back the pizza had not been ordered yet and Lawrence freaked out and said “Where’s the pizza?!” This exact phrase has been used many times with sorority girls, including me and my friends. The “desperate” need of food, like pizza, for girls is shown almost every day.
