Struggles Of An Ex-Show Choir Kid

We all miss the glitter and the spotlight at least a little bit.

If you were a show choir kid in high school, then you know exactly what goes into being a strong performer. It's a whole lot more than what "Glee" makes it out to be. There's no spontaneously bursting into perfectly in-tune songs and synchronized choreography. However, after your time on the stage spinning around in sparkly costumes comes to an end, there are definitely some things you miss.

1. No One Understands Your Random Singing Outbursts

It's just not the same once you're away at school and the perfect opportunity for a musical reference pops up. Bursting into a song from "Legally Blonde" or "Hairspray" is drastically under appreciated when you're in the middle of a class filled with people more than less interested in musical theater.

2. You Miss Your "Family"

Sure, college offers a lot of opportunities to find a new home away from home, such as Greek life, clubs, and organizations. But nothing will ever quite compare to that eclectic group of people you spent six hour choreography rehearsals with, traveled on a bus for hours to performances with, and watched you grow from a shy first year to a diva senior member.

3. You Are Forever Referencing Past Performances

"OMG! I love this song! This was in our spring set my junior year. I was so mad that I wasn't in the front for this dance!" Everyone knows the struggle of saying a sentence like this and getting the confused looks that follow from whoever you announce it to. But how can you not get excited after singing and dancing to that song for months on end? The moment of nostalgia is too exciting not to share it.

4. Trying To Explain Old Show Choir Drama Without Sounding Like A "Glee" Character

No one outside of your show choir quite gets how your psycho director made your life hell, how people got solos that no one else thought they should have, and how someone trying to take your spot front and center was the end of the world. Sure, you look back on it now and laugh about it, but you can't tell those stories without sounding like Rachel Berry or Kurt Hummel...even if you and your best friend kinda were in your high school.

5. Watching The Current Show Choir And Being Hyper-Critical

Oh, my gosh, did you see that? They were a half step behind! That was so noticeable. Rough translation: I'm jealous I'm not up there performing anymore but in reality no group is ever going to compare to the show choir groups that I was a part of. So, even though sour notes and missed steps sure as heck happened when you were up there on stage, they only matter now that you're not.

6. Missing Festivals

You work tirelessly all fall for the festivals. Even though there are no winners or losers, there's still competition. At the time, the most important thing is being the best of the five or six show choirs from your area performing that night. Of course, you always have the bragging rights to hold knowing that your group always was.

7. Wishing You Could Go Back And Perform One Last Show

Even though you're having a blast at college, there's always that one part of you that misses performing in your itchy, frilly, and stiff costume under the hot stage lights. You hold the memories dearly and settle for reliving the performances through old videos. But you wish there was a way to go back for just one day and perform again

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
