The Struggles Of Having Long, Beautiful, And Time-Consuming Hair

Sure it's pretty, but just wait till you have to comb it.

Let’s face it—we love our long hair. It's versatile, goes with anything, and gets us tons of compliments. If only everyone knew the struggles that come along with keeping your hair the jaw-dropping tangle magnet that it is. Whether you have curly or straight hair, all girls with an abundance of the stuff can understand the what it takes to keep the frizz under control and the static in check. Who else understands that your head is always five degrees warmer than the rest of your body in the summer and the reason you don’t have to wear ear muffs in the winter? So here are six struggles that come along with keeping all those luscious locks tame year round.

1. The momentary heart attack that comes with every hairball.

One moment you are minding your own business, and the next you’re being accosted by what could be a very dangerous spider. And then you realize it’s your own hair.

2. That one piece that never cooperates.

You spend hours getting your hair curled perfectly and almost as much time making sure you have enough hair spray to keep the curls together while simultaneously making sure it's still got enough bounce. And then you see it. The one piece that deliberately hangs on the wrong side of your head. The one piece whose sole purpose is to make your life more difficult.

3. The never-ending tangles.

You learned as a child that tangles are a way of life, and now that you have to comb through your own hair every night, you have no choice but to suffer through. Each one of your combs, brushes, and picks gets through your hair a little differently, and detangler is a necessity. You don’t even care anymore when you walk out of the aisle with three bottles.

4. Getting it caught. On everything.

Whether it was the chairs from elementary school or the sunglasses you try to wear fashionably on top of your head, you know the shear pain that comes along with getting your hair caught.

5. Devoting half a day to straightening your hair.

Usually you make the decision to straighten your hair days in advance and clear your schedule so everyone knows what you are doing from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. You use the days beforehand to mentally prepare for the three-hour venture because you know there will be no stopping halfway through.

6. Taking ankle-deep showers.

At first you just wonder, "Why there is so much water?" Then you remember it’s because of your hair. No one has the patience to constantly clean out the drain, so ankle-deep showers are your new norm.

At the end of the day we love our hair and would hate to have anything else, but dealing with this mane can be a real battle. And some days it wins. So go ahead and keep fighting, because your hair is a long, beautiful mess. Some days all we can do is comb it out, brush it up, and dream about a conditioner that will detangle for us.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
