Within the past year, I have noticed that having bangs has become a popular hairstyle once again. I have had bangs for almost over a year, and while I love what they do for my hair, I have also experienced the many struggles of having them. These are just a few of the many reasons why I have both a love and hate relationship with my bangs:
10. They will never look the same in the morning.
On Sunday night, you shower, blow-dry, and go to sleep with your bangs looking great. They are laying exactly how you want them (which never happens) and you're feeling amazing. Come Monday morning, you awake to your bangs being extremely unkempt — especially the side you slept on. While this problem is fixable, it will never look exactly how you had it the night before or on your first wash-day.
9. Blow-drying your hair is a must.
Sadly, the days of letting your hair air-dry because you are too lazy are behind you. After you shower, blow-drying your hair is a must. Otherwise, your bangs will be flat, and flat bangs are NOT ideal. I highly recommend also using a round brush after you blow-dry. It will help give your bangs some pizazz.
8. Wait until Summer comes...
Having bangs is all fun and games until summer comes and the temperatures rise and humidity hits you. It also doesn't help in the summer when you are forced to blow-dry your hair when its 90 degrees outside. Overall, having bangs will make you sweat more, AND putting your hair up completely is also a big struggle. I recommend using a hairband or hair clip to keep your bangs off your forehead.
7. Wearing hats.
Whether it is baseball caps, winter hats, etc., you will never be able to wear them the same way again. I see too many pictures of girls on Instagram wearing a hat and posing, with their hair laying perfectly. To say I'm jealous is an understatement. I have to wear a hat for my job, and in order for my bangs to not be pushed down in front of my face, I have to push them back. By the time I take my hat off, my bangs are messed up and need to be washed to look normal again, regardless of whether they were clean at the beginning of my shift or not.
Here's a tip: if it is raining or snowing out, wear a hat. It won't even matter that you're pushing your bangs back because they were bound to get messed up anyway. Might as well accept it and not have to worry.
6. If it's a windy day, forget it...
Bangs and a windy day are not a good combination. By the time you get to the destination in which you are walking, your bangs are all over the place. If you don't have a brush or comb handy, this causes even more of a dilemma. Honestly, it's best to just let your bangs get blown by the wind, it makes it worse trying to hold them in place. Let mother nature have its way with your bangs for the time being and try not to be self-conscious about it. However, trying to take a nice picture when there's even a slight breeze is always an issue. Good luck!
5. Do my bangs or my glasses get in the way?
If you wear glasses, you probably know by now that wearing glasses and having bangs are not a good combination as well. While it looks cute and sophisticated, it also is a big pain, especially when your bangs get caught in the bend of your glasses. It hurts having to pull those hairs out! You might also be familiar with the struggle of having to make sure your bangs are either all over or under your glasses--not having some hairs in front or some behind. Getting your bangs to lay right in contrast to your glasses was a risk we were all willing to take whilst getting this haircut.
4. How quickly they grow.
I remember how badly I wanted my hair to grow while I was in high school, and it seemed nearly impossible. I even tried taking these gross-smelling pills in an attempt to make my hair grow. I wish I could have worked the miracle grow on bangs with my hair then. Bangs seem to grow back almost instantly. I cut them, and not too much later, I'm in need to cut them again because they are in my eyes again. It makes me wonder why the rest of my hair isn't the same way.
3. They need to be washed every day.
While I have oily hair as it is, having bangs has emphasized this for me. They need to be washed before the rest of your hair does. So while the rest of my hair can last for at least 2 days, my bangs cannot. I've tried to make them last 2 days (or sometimes even longer) and they end up looking like limp pieces of straw (I have blonde hair) by the time I choose to finally wash them again. Although it is tedious, I do recommend washing them every day. You'll feel better.
2. They are always in your eyes.
No matter what, your bangs pretty much always seem to be in your eyes (unless you cut them very short, but only a select few people can pull that off.) As I mentioned in #3, bangs grow incredibly fast. As soon as you cut them, it feels as if you are cutting them again only a week later. It's also a pain to cut them evenly at times, so it might just be one piece of hair grating on your last nerve by constantly being in your eye. Be prepared.
1. You will grow attached.
Despite all of these downfalls, you will grow attached to your bangs. Which is both a good and bad thing — it's good because you're stuck with them for awhile because they're difficult to get rid of — and it's bad because you'll always be indecisive about whether you should make a change or not. Overall, I do love my bangs and you eventually get used to them and find ways to deal with all of these issues.
