Dear School Districts who have strict dress codes,
I am writing today to say that I was fortunate enough to have gone to schools where the dress code wasn't too strict. Sure we had one, however, unless you were dressing very inappropriately, you were not taken out of school. My education was not sub par because of what my peers or I were wearing. My peers and I were not distracted by some collar bones showing. I simply do not understand the need for strict dress codes.
I am a university student, and as many are aware, there are absolutely no dress codes in a lecture hall; and guess what... whatever someone from Apple Pi is wearing is not affecting me or my learning process. Now I understand that in the ages of middle and high school kids do need some structure in their life. Just don't kick some kid out of the prom if she wanted to wear a tux. That's sexist and someone has to say it, homophobic. Sleeveless dresses (or actually dresses that expose shoulders) should be allowed to be worn at a school dance. I am so not sorry, a girl should not have to cover up because you think her shoulders will distract the boys.
Please reread your dress codes and think about this: do you think each and every single male is looking at your shoulder or collar bone or *gasp* even your knees when they're "exposed." Clearly, you think so if you think the males in your school districts are behaving like this. Or if the school administrator is a male: do you look at a girls shoulders or collar bones or knees when "exposed"? If so, I don't think working in a school environment is for you. Because girls should not be told to cover up and be told that their collar bones are sexual at the age of 13. Is that what you want to teach the next generation? We do not live in the 1900s anymore. We live in a free country, and we should let kids express themselves through the clothing they wear. If that means going to prom in a tux, then GO FOR IT. It's already hard enough at that age, why put even more stress on them?
Love,
your neighborhood humanoid
