College has taught me more than how to balance a social life, school, internships and Greek life. My professors have crammed my mind with all the information I need to work hard, achieve a career and succeed in the real world. But the most important lesson I have learned in college is being accepting to the unique and diverse people I encounter.
I have crossed paths with a lot of different people. Some shy, some that like to spend their weekends in the library, others that spend their parent’s money at the bars, some who will be my best friends forever and others that I might not ever see again. No matter whom I meet, everyone has something special to offer. Everyone comes from different places, has varied hobbies, and has different ambitions. College is a big melting pot of colorful people and I’m appreciative of the opportunity to have met so many of them.
Embracing all the rare and fun personalities in college teaches us not to be judgmental. It’s the time to start appreciating diversity rather than criticize others for expressing themselves. That guy dancing strangely by himself to Katy Perry: just let him do his thing. Don’t judge that girl eating three burritos. Sometimes you just want three burritos, so what? If they’re happy, be happy for them.
Getting to know a variety of people keeps life exciting. I don’t want to meet a ton of Basic Brittanys and Normal Nathans. I’d rather be a friend to Weird Wanda and Goofy Garret, because the goofballs and weirdos are the people who are comfortable and happy with themselves. Besides, no one looks stupid when they’re having fun. Next time you see Katy Perry dancing guy or hungry burrito girl, befriend them and have some fun with them. You could learn a few dance moves or even score some burrito bites.
Learn how to live with all the weirdos and diverse people of the world. Open your mind and step out of your comfort zone by meeting someone new and offbeat. Also remember to be an offbeat person yourself. Don’t be a Basic Brittany or Normal Nathan, because the world doesn't need any more boring people. Go express yourself and thrive off of what makes you happy. Be strange, but don’t be a stranger.
