It is no secret that in society, there is a large amount of gender inequality. Whether that is shown in the workplace or at home, women often are viewed differently from men. But what happens when a woman is confident and proud, and wants to show it off?
Last week, Usher posted a Snapchat of himself in his steam room, and the world almost stopped. His image was of himself sitting on the floor, with the caption "blowing off steam" with an emoji covering up his lower area. The internet went insane, with article titles saying it was Godly, and captions below the images pointing out how the emoji isn't even big enough to hide "Usher's gusher."
Now, let's look at the reverse. Kim Kardashian. Whether you hate them or love them (I personally am slightly obsessed), you cannot deny the fact that the Kardashian sisters' social media game is on point, and so are their bodies. Shortly after her baby Saint was born, Kim posted an old nude photo on Instagram, with black boxes covering up her top and bottom areas. Once again, the internet went insane. However, this time, it was not as Godly. Tweets from celebrities saying she should put clothes on, and news articles shaming her for posting the image came soaring into news feeds.
So why are women shamed for appreciating their bodies and themselves, while men are praised? Why do women feel ashamed for appreciating their own bodies, minds, and capabilities? What is so wrong with feeling confident and proud?
I love my body. I am confident in myself. I am proud of everything that I am.
Women should be able to feel comfortable in their own skin. It should be okay to tell people you feel good without shame. It should also be okay to post any type of image you want of your body, for any gender. Women should be able to say, "Hey. I look great today, and I want to show the world" without endless amounts of slut shaming. It does not mean she is being a terrible influence, or even worse, that she is "asking for it." She is not being cocky, or provocative. She is happy, and it is as simple as that.
It is okay to feel good about yourself. It is okay to feel confident and happy. And it is also okay to express those feelings in many ways. Whether that be covering up, or letting it all show. There should be no shame, no guilt, and no judgement. Women have amazing bodies with amazing capabilities. Men also have amazing bodies with amazing capabilities. Just because you are female, does not mean you have to act or speak differently than a man. You have the same amount of rights to your own body, therefore, you should show your body the way you want to show it. Be proud, be happy, and be confident.
