With the recent release of both "IT" and "Stranger Things 2", focus on child actors has grown tremendously...and not all in good ways.
Most of it, however, has been positive; support has come out for the kids and their potential careers as many people want to protect the children from the dangerous impacts of the entertainment industry.
But there has been some negative backlash in which some "fans" have started to sexualize the underage actors.
I'm not sure how else I have to say this, but: sexualizing underage children has never been and never will be okay.
"Stranger Thing's" star, Millie Bobby Brown, was named one of the reasons TV is "sexier than ever" in the August edition of W Magazine. She is 13-years old. Finn Wolfhard and his fellow co-star, Jack Dylan, have also been 'shipped' by "Stranger Things" fans.
If you don't know what 'shipped' means, it's when fans are rooting for a romantic and/or sexual relationship between the two.
These are kids. These are not adults. They're children who haven't even reached high school yet. There are no other words to describe this other than disgusting and dehumanizing. They're human beings who need to be able to grow without you seeing them solely as sexual objects.
It's gotten to the point where Finn Wolfhard had to tweet about it,
"Hey everybody! I don't wanna ex-communicate anyone from this fandom, but if you are for real you will not harass my friends or co-workers. Y'all know who you are."
Just because these people are celebrities and you may never meet them, it does not give you permission to sexualize them. If you saw a grown ass adult hitting on a child right in front of you, you'd say something (if you're a decent person, I would hope so).
So what makes it okay for you to sexualize these actors?
People shouldn't have to be reminded of this; it's common sense and common courtesy.
Don't be disgusting.
