I've heard countless things about what people think asthma truly is and I'm here to tell you what you think may not be the case. I've encountered multiple people who act as if they're experts when it comes to asthma and to those I say, I've lived with it my whole life. I'm pretty sure I know a thing or two about my own health.
"My friends with asthma never have problems"
GiphyEveryone is different. Just because their asthma isn't bad doesn't mean others are the same. I've been hospitalized because of mine. If that isn't bad then I don't know what is.
"It's all in your head"
GiphyHow would you, a non-asthmatic, even be able to think that? Having dealt with my asthma for going on 21 years, it feels pretty real to me. According to Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA), roughly 10 Americans die every day from asthma. Do you want to tell their families that it was all in their head?
"I'm glad I don't have asthma"
GiphyI'm glad for you as well. I wouldn't wish asthma on my worst enemy. As the weather changes, my asthma worsens every year. I wouldn't want anybody to deal with that. The moment my asthma takes over, I am basically useless.
"Do you want a cigarette/want to vape?"
GiphyI already have a lung disease. What more do you want from me? I understand this question if you didn't know but the moment you find out that someone has asthma it's best to avoid those questions. It can make them feel left out.
"Hurry up"
GiphyAsthma doesn't allow me to "hurry up." I get out of breath really easily so rushing me like that is only going to lead to disaster. You can rush all you want. I'll be behind you and get there eventually.
