Stop Idolizing False Idols

Because there's so much more we could be doing than worshiping the Kardashians.

Over the past few years, society has granted fame and fortune to those who have no reason for it. We watch their shows, religiously check their Instagrams, buy their products, and wish we were just like them. There are many more people and groups out there that fit this mold, but the main group that I'm focusing on here is the Kardashians.

Why are they famous again? Are they talented singers, brilliant actresses, or making a positive influence in society? Oh right, no. They got famous off of Kim's sex tape (?) and the rest of them take glamorous photos and swim in their own money. They do absolutely nothing with the millions they earn from doing who knows what to help anyone, and we're OK with that?

Something seems off here.

What society needs, especially this day in age, is people who will speak the truth. We need people who will help others, and who want to make us a better person too. What about Taylor Swift, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Lady Gaga, heck, even Justin Bieber, who have donated to charities and causes to help make a difference. Why don't we have the same reaction to these celebrities as we do those who don't do anything of, well, relevance?

I am sick of the fact that society will make anyone famous nowadays. As long as you look glamorous (plastic surgery?) and have a lot of money, we'll eat it up. But why? What is this bringing to society? All we do is sit around and watch them, wishing we had their hair, their lips, their clothes. They aren't inspiring us, they aren't making a positive change or providing true entertainment. They're just there.

If anything, the only thing they do bring to our lives is just the desire to want to change how we look. Personally, I don't want to have so many surgeries, implants, and injections that I look completely different from who I actually am, but I guess that's cool now! Please stop. Society preaches to love yourself and to accept yourself, but then we also preach about the many procedures this family has had done? It's hypocritical.

We would rather participate in the Kylie Jenner lip challenge and think that a teenager who has a 2 million dollar home, Ferrari, and enough clothes to sell and be able to feed an entire third world country is cool and totally OK. Actually, we idolize her specifically for those things. But what did she do to earn it? NOTHING. This is what drives me crazy. They are famous for no reason. Nothing. I can't believe we still think of them as admirable and something to strive to be more like.

I could go on for hours about what infuriates me about each of the Jenners/Kardashians specifically, but they don't need any more publicity than they already get. I'm just really hoping this trend of idolizing people for doing absolutely nothing dies out soon, because it's getting old.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
