Stop Hitting "Shuffle" On Life

The playlist is just too big.

Stop Hitting "Shuffle" On Life

Have you ever found yourself plugging in your headphones, heading to your playlist, and pressing “shuffle” over and over even though you know exactly what song you want? I did the same just yesterday. I knew I wanted “Dust in the Wind” by Kansas but instead of just scrolling down and clicking on that particular song, I mindlessly shuffled the list until I finally hit it. Why???

I think we do this to ourselves. What we need can be right in front of us–and here we are, making things harder than they should be, hitting shuffle when we could just get right to the point, when we could have that one thing we’re missing. Something in us just won’t let us do it.

Isn’t this like our relationship with God? He offers us so much, at no cost. Here’s just a few of the things we could have if only we would let ourselves…

Calm and safety: “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters.” -Psalm 23:1-2

Constance: “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” -James 1:17

Strength: “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” -Isaiah 41:10

Protection: “My God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation. He is my stronghold, my refuge and my savior– from violent people you save me.” -2 Samuel 22:3

And literally anything else you could possibly need: “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.” -Philippians 4:19

If only we would stop chasing after worldly things. If only we’d stop striving for that status, for the approval of a person or group of people, to not only be included but lifted up, to be known, to have achieved this crazy high level of success–if only we could see what really matters. That no success here on earth can equate to a success in God’s eyes–to a live lived out of love.

We have all we need right in front of us–Jesus. When He died for us, He said, “It is finished,” and it is. So stop pushing things, stop looking elsewhere, stop testing your luck. It’s already been done. You’re good. You’re saved, you’re forgiven, you’re loved. Take a moment to be satisfied where you are.

Stop hitting shuffle and chasing after those earthly things. It’s just a waste of time, and chances are, with a playlist as big as the one this world has to offer you, you’ll never land where you want to be just aimlessly, repeatedly pressing that button. Be direct. Pursue love, happiness, faith, honesty, grace…in other words, GOD–no matter where you are, who you are, what you’re going through. These are the things that will get you where you right where you need to be.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
