I'm a college student, I am taking 7 classes, 18 hours, I work 15 hours a week here and sometimes I go home to work on the weekends, I am Financial Branch Chair for Georgia College Miracle, I am a peer mentor to 5 freshmen for the Emerging Leaders Program, I'm a member of a sorority, I play intramurals/stay active with working out, I serve as the president of the financial literacy club, and I try to keep a social life.
I bet you read that, and said "Holy cow, you're impressive," I'm here to tell you that I'm not, and here is why.
This past week, Milledgeville has taken some tough hits ranging from a local student passing away from impact of hitting a bus, an illness breaking out on campus, a truck catching on fire, an armed robbery and most recently the loss of a house due to an electrical fire that belonged to a fraternity close to GCSU's hearts. This past week has been harder than most for this town, but this past week has taught me a lot, and one lesson I have learned is that we need to stop worshipping the busy lifestyle.
Being busy is no excuse to lack a social life, or to be a platonic friend or even to feel worse for yourself versus others. Just this past week, a friend texted me and asked to catch up, said she had been struggling with some things. Want to know my response? "Yeah, I have three tests this week, but after this week we can hang out." WHAT, WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU? A friend just told you she was struggling, and you haven't learned time management enough to find an hour of your time to give her? WRONG. You have, you have 24 hours in the day, take out 6 for sleep, leaving you with 18 hours to split between classes, and things you choose to participate in. Moral of the story; you can make time for anything you WANT to make time for.
So, what if we stepped back from worshipping busy as a college student and started to worship someone who was intentional with their time, and someone who may have full hands but has a full heart that can step in at all times. Our bodies need rest, so why do we glorify busy? Busy isn't better, busy is a state of mind, and it's about time that we call it how we see it. Put time into where your heart wants to put time. Start to realize that how we look on paper is not how people will remember us in the years to come. People will remember how you conducted yourself in life, and how you were intentional in your time leaving plenty of overflow that could spread love to others.
So, let's stop filling our plates up so much, and start filling our hearts up more so that we can embrace this life and enjoy our days rather than feel like a constant moving train that cannot seem to find the brakes. Life wasn't made for 70 mph speeds, it was made to complete at our own pace, and experience every ounce of this crazy, beautiful world because we don't know what tomorrow holds or the events that are in our future.
