Stop Defending Greek Life

Stop Defending Greek Life

After numerous stories have come out about the negative aspects of fraternity and sorority life (like this and this), members of chapters have wrote numerous articles in response, defending their organizations to people who are strong opponents of Greek like. I'm here to tell everyone to stop defending Greek life.

Yes, as a member of a sorority, I'm telling you to stop.

Stop writing the comments and posts about all the good you do as a chapter. Do you think that people who always beat down sororities really care? Answer: no.

Do you think they really care how much money you raised at your philanthropy event or what your chapter GPA was last semester?

Answer: no.

I don't think we need to prove ourselves as organizations to anyone except ourselves. Maybe, if members spent half the time they spend defending all the "good we do" actually doing the good things we always talk about, people could actually see what these organizations do for the community. We need to start acting on our words.

We know what our letters stand for, what our founders want from us, and what our organization stands for today. Why do we need to prove that to anyone who doesn't wear our letters? We made commitments of service, academics, and sisterhood (or brotherhood) to our fellow members, not that random girl writing the Huffington Post article that was shared on your wall by your invasive aunt who was wondering what your thoughts were on it.

I know who I am as a sorority woman. I know what "real sorority life" is like. I don't need to tell random strangers on the internet what it means to live in a house with 30 girls and have matching t-shirts. If those strangers wanted to know what Greek life was about, they would find out for themselves.

Numerous campaigns have come out to redefine what it means to be a part of a Greek letter organization (www.ReThinkGreek.com), and I can't help but wonder why we feel the need to participate in grand marketing campaigns when we only get more backlash from the general population.

The bottom line is this. People are always going to hate on Greek organizations. It's your obligation, as a member, to not bash another person just because they don't understand your chapter. Did you have negative thoughts about Greek life before joining?

Your mom probably thought it wasn't a great idea for you to rush either, but how did you prove her wrong? It wsn't by having hour long conversations about all the great things you do, but by actually doing philanthropy work, getting good grades, and surrounding yourself with strong women.

Now get out there and prove all those people wrong, but not via social media. Most importantly, prove to yourself that you uphold the values of your organization, and that you joined for the right reasons.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
