Watermelon, sparklers, picnics, lake day, fireworks, and red, white, and blue everywhere - all remind us of one thing: The 4th of July. Every year it's one of the most celebrated holidays in the United States of America. People of all kinds of religion and background gather as one nation to listen to bands and watch the fireworks explode in the sky. But I want you to stop celebrating the Fourth of July.
Stop celebrating the Fourth of July when during the other 364 days you sit behind a screen sharing hate about your president. Or, to make it even worse, you claim to the social media world that he isn't "your president". Stop celebrating the Fourth of July if you litter. Why celebrate a country that you don't take care of? Stop celebrating the Fourth of July if you hate on groups throughout America. We're proud of being probably the most diverse country on the globe and if you can't take pride in that, then move to a less diverse country where (let me remind you) they do not celebrate the fourth of July. And please stop celebrating the Fourth of July if you constantly see problems in our society and then continue to sit back and do nothing about it other than complain.
Because here's the thing about Independence Day - it didn't come easy. There were leaders people disagreed with and mundane tasks that had to be carried out. People fled here because freedom of religion and culture existed - a freedom that had to be fought for by people that saw problems in their society and did something about it.
So this year, when you go to celebrate the Fourth of July with your families - take a moment to recognize the soil you stand on without a worry in the world about whether or not you'll eat or wake up tomorrow. Realize that the country you "celebrate" has been through its trials but still stands in all glory and that it's worth celebrating because it means as much to you as those that fight for it day in and day out.
