Stereotypes Of An English Major

I've always loved English. I didn't realize it was what I really wanted to do with my life until after my first semester of college. I've always loved reading, writing, and interpreting what a piece really means. But as soon as the second second semester started, people began to stereotype me because of my major.

Just because I'm an English major doesn't mean:

  • I know how to spell every word in the dictionary.
  • I know all the rules for grammar.
  • Shakespeare is my lover.
  • My favorite books are classics.
  • I'm not going to have a successful job.
  • I love poetry.
  • I'm supposed to dress all fancy.
  • I'm an expert at writing resumes.
  • I live at the library or a book store.
  • The book store is my favorite place in the world.
  • Terrible grammar makes me uncomfortable.
  • I want to be a teacher.

  • I love to edit papers.
  • I love the books in all my English classes.
  • I know how to write a successful paper.
  • I know how to cite a paper.
  • I love tea.
  • I love Kindles.
  • I love creative writing.
  • I love academic writing.
  • I stay up all night, consistently.
  • I love coffee.

  • I know the difference between who and whom.
  • I procrastinate all my papers.
  • I love the smell of books.
  • I keep up with all the reading in the class.
  • I think the books are better than the movie.
  • I love to write.
  • I hate math.
  • I chose this major because I had no idea what else to do with my life.
  • My degree won't come into actual use, ever.
  • I never get sick of reading.
  • It irritates me when people use improper grammar.
  • I know when to italicize something.
  • I know when to underline something.
  • I know how to identify MLA writing.
  • I understand all types of work.
  • I own every book known to man.
  • I've read every book known to man.

  • I love Jane Eyre.
  • I hate science.
  • I know the difference between women and woman.
  • I know the difference between men and man.
  • I love philosophy.
  • A majority of my textbooks are novels.
  • Being an English major is the worst thing I can do to myself.
  • I know all the English grammar terms.
  • I know the difference between singular and plural words.
  • I've never taken an English test.
  • I understand everything I read.

  • I know how to write a history paper.
  • I can write a novel.
  • I love wine.
  • I love chess.
  • I have a huge library.
  • I've read "Moby Dick."
  • I know how to pronounce every single word.
  • I'm an expert at pronouns.
  • I love writing essays.
  • I don't have a favorite book.
  • I've read everything by Edgar Allan Poe.
  • I can easily analyze poems.

I fit about not even half of these stereotypes. I feel that every major has their own stereotypes. Not every person follows their stereotype.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
