There are multiple ways to get involved on campus, between working with the BG community and working with the media. When it comes to working with the BG community, one can join different learning communities that helps the surrounding areas. Then when it comes to the media, one can join BG News, BG24 News, or even the BG Radio.
I actually had the pleasure of sitting in on one of the BG radio shows called "Back to Reality". This Radio show focuses on music from the past, mainly music that was created when we (millennials) were too young to listen to them. On BGs campus, there are very few black organizations so for this radio show to come out and play old music is a big step. There are four people who are DJs on this show and they play music depending on how they are feeling during that week. Their names are Clayton Pea (Zulu), Devin (DJ Silk Satchmo), Terrin, and Annointyd. Each of these members come from different parts of Ohio, which means they have different viewpoints when it comes to certain things. Annointyd and Devin are both Cleveland Natives and they speak highly of the city, whereas Clayton is from Columbus and Terrin is from Cincinnati. As I spoke to Terrin, he was telling me that he and Clayton came up with the idea of dedicating a radio show to throwback music. Because the majority of the radio shows were playing all present day music, they wanted to switch it up a bit with the oldies. At first, this was an idea that happened in 2016, then became a reality in February 2017.
The show I sat in and listened to, they were speaking to many young black entrepreneurs who are under 30. Among these young entrepreneurs, they weren't just BG students, they spoke to a student from the University of Akron who makes their own natural products. One student makes amazing hats that are sold throughout the BG community and one student (who is a freshman!) makes ties for men and chokers for women.
Overall, I loved sitting in and listening to this radio show because it played all of my favorite music that I used to listen to. I've met each of these lovely DJs on separate occasions and they all have wonderful personalities and that is what makes this show so great! Listening to them interview the many entrepreneurs, even left me surprised. Their questions and how they were able to hold the conversation and still make it enjoyable for the listeners, brightened my night. I will continue to listen in on this show until the last Thursday of the semester.
