Formed in the summer of 2013 and comprised of Dan Avidan, Brian Wecht, (Dan and Brian also have a separate band called Ninja Sex Party which was formed in 2009) and Arin Hanson (aka Egoraptor on Youtube) who all co-host the Let’s Play channel gamegrumps on Youtube, Starbomb is a band that parodies characters from video games such as Link (“Legend of Zelda” Series), Cloud (“Final Fantasy VII”), Solid Snake (“Metal Gear Solid” Series), Samus (“Metroid” series), and many, many more. Their two albums are hilariously catchy (further evidenced by the release of a karaoke version, and a just-the-tunes version of both of their albums currently out).
They show sides of beloved characters that are interesting, albeit non-canonical, such as the rivalry between Mario and Luigi for Peach’s affection, Megaman’s Marital Problems, and a how Tom Nook is basically a mob boss in “Animal Crossing.” It also chronicles Ash ketchum’s mid-life crisis, Ryu and Ken’s rap battle from the “Street Fighter” series, Simon Belmont’s party crashing in “Castlevania.” As well as a parody of the concept of beating up your friends in the Smash Bros. fighting games, introducing an insane amount of fake (yet funny) pokemon, and what would happen if Ryu from the “Street Fighter” series went to a high school featuring the characters from “Mortal Kombat.” There’s also two songs that parody how complicated Final fantasy VII and Metal Gear Solid are.
I’ve listened to both albums extensively, and at any point in my daily life. While I’m cleaning, walking around campus, trying to relax after a stressful day, and even in the shower. Their songs are cheerful, explicit, and amazing.
If cursing and explicit language bother you, this is not the band for you (nor is the channel gamegrumps, although I love it).
The only non-explicit track Starbomb has made is called “Minecraft is for everyone” in which a creeper tries to deal with his anger issues and stop cursing, although the only reason it’s not explicit is because stuff is bleeped out to add to the kid-friendly atmosphere that the band is parodying, which makes sense since most people who play minecraft are under the age of 13 (although this 20 year old definitely knows how to put some hours into it).
I would highly recommend both albums. Their first is self-titled “Starbomb," and their second is called “Player Select.”
If you would like to buy them on iTunes, here’s a link for their first album, and here's a link to their second album.
For all you hipsters and people lucky enough to have a radio that takes CD’s in your car who would like a physical copy, here’s their first album on Amazon, and here’s their second album on Amazon.
They can also be found at other various online retailers, but I personally like Amazon. They can also be listened to for free on Youtube, and on Spotify.
I really hope you all listen to “Starbomb” as you can tell they’re one of my favorite bands, and they make this gamer extremely happy. With everything going on in the world, I think the world needs a little more humor.
