You probably read the headline and thought "Wow, this girl is a big, giant (insert curse word here) because she's bashing 'Star Wars.'" I swear I'm really not. However, I am tired of people not only bashing me, but many other people as well because we do make up the small part of the population that has never seen "Star Wars."
I am actually sort of interested in seeing "Star Wars." When my parents got married, the first movie out of the series was being shown in the room across the hall from where their reception was taking place. I can tell you who Hans Solo, Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Dark Vader, R2-D2, and Yoda (which, as a baby, I was nicknamed after) are. At the same time, though, I have never seen a single movie. Quite frankly, it would take up most of my break to see all six movies (between watching "The Office") before I could go see the most recent one.
In all honesty, I think "Star Wars" fans are great people. Many of my friends are major fans of the franchise. But the constant question "You've never seen Star Wars?!" is borderline harassment. Or, my favorite comment, "You must live under a rock!" because I've never seen the entire franchise gets old rather quickly.
Growing up as a kid, my family was never really interested in the movie (yes, even though I was nicknamed Yoda as a kid, my parents thought the movie was boring), so for me, there was never a huge collective interest.
Maybe I should have seen it as a kid, but I never really thought about it when I was a kid, because I was too busy playing with Bratz dolls and Polly Pockets.
On one hand, I can admit to watching some of the classic "Star Trek," "Star Trek: The Next Generation," and "Star Trek Voyager" episodes. My dad would watch a lot of all of these shows on Spike TV.
In my sophomore year of college, I watched "Doctor Who" (until Steven Moffat screwed it up for all Whovians), and I even watched some classic "Doctor Who," or at least the episodes that I can find on Netflix. I've watched "Torchwood" ("Doctor Who" spinoff) here and there, and other shows over the years. So I know a thing or two about dedicated fandoms.
However, the worst thing about not being a "Star Wars" fan is the fact that people are so nasty to others about ruining the movie not everyone cares about.
Here's a classic tip for everyone: if you have nothing nice to say, don't say it at all.
Also, not the best idea to post spoilers on the web for those that haven't already seen the movie. Avoiding social media until you have seen the movie may be your best option. Unfollow people on Facebook that you know are obsessed with "Star Wars" and you know won't shut up about the movie. Or, when someone asks you how the movie went, tell them it was good and that is all you need to say. No reason to be rude to other people over a movie. This rule applies to any movie, not just "Star Wars."
Admittedly, the "Star Wars" phenomenon has made me more interested in seeing at least some, if not all, of the movies after all.
