The clouds have parted, the sun is shining, birds are singing and so is all of mankind. Why? Frank Ocean has finally released his long awaited sophomore album. After four years, two tentative release dates, and one odd live stream of Ocean building a case of stairs, "Blonde" was unveiled to the world on Saturday, August 20 to the excitement and relief of all his fans. Safe to say it sent them through a roller coaster of emotions.
Emotion 1: Surprise
After July came and went with no new Ocean album, fans started to grow weary. Would we ever hear the masterpiece that was then titled "Boys Don't Cry?" But, just when you begin to wonder what songs will comfort you in your darkest times, the album drops and Frank emerges from the self-constructed abyss that he was trapped in and into the spotlight once again. No warning, just pure speculation and a perfectly executed Beyonce-esqe maneuver.
Emotion 2: Denial
I personally didn't believe what I was reading when I saw the first article containing a link to "Endless," a live stream where Ocean is seen pacing around, building a case of stairs with his music layered over it. "Just another teaser," I thought. Lo and behold, the next day "Blonde" was released on Apple Music, and I have never downloaded an app so fast.
Emotion 3: Realization
Imagine having to wait four years for Christmas morning, but you get everything you ever wanted once it arrives. Or your very best friends throwing you a surprise party for your birthday. That's what listening to "Blonde" makes you feel. Indescribable bliss (along with a bunch of other Drake-esque emotions).
Emotion 4: Panic
This. Album. Made. Me. Feel. Things. Four years we've been waiting for this, and when it finally arrives, it turns me into a puddle of emotional mush. And what's to stop him from pulling another Beyonce and doing it again? How long will the wait be next time? Eight years?
Emotion 5: Happiness
In all honesty, I'm just glad that the album is finally out, and no one is on red alert about when it will be released anymore. It's a beautiful piece of art that was crafted with love and immense care. Why else would it have taken so long for him to put it out? The world is a happy place, people are singing and music is a wonderful thing.
